I have no belief in any of this junk! I'm an atheist and the only thing that I believe is threatening us as we speak is Global Warming, and we definitely can change that problem, it's just that no body wants to contribute to the problem, or not enough people believe in it!
I don't think this case could have less to do with faith and spirituality. I mean, this subject couldn't give a **** about whether or not you believed in gods. It doesn't care whether you're Christian or Buddhist or not. It's indifferent. Just like how being atheist or spiritual didn't have a **** to do with Y2k. There were probably tons of non-god-believing people out there that thought something might have happened in Y2k. And tons that didn't. So who cares about whether or not you believe in (a) god(s), in relation to this topic?

*Facepalm.* Lemme give it to you straight: being atheist or not couldn't have less to do with this. It's a natural phenomenon that will or will not happen (the supposed pole flipping).

Ugh, shoot. Disregard this half, I have no idea what I'm trying to say now.

If you think about it, there is a relation to religion to this topic, because like the person who chose this topic related to the Mayans and how their calendar some how "predicted" that something big and bad was coming (hahaha that's what she said!).

And I never said religion had anything to do with this... I was saying that because the person who posted something earlier about religion, and I just wanted to imply that I don't have a religion (don't ask why I wanted people to know, because I don't think I meant to type that in. Lol).

There are solutions to global warming without having to change our ways dramatically.

Sounds good, but what about the aquatic biomes? What will happen to them? Pollution, that's what... In this world, every action creates a consequence. Have they tested this yet? And proven that this will work?

Few things to say... i really didn't feel like reading through all these posts...

The mayan calandar actually states that there will be a catastropic EVENT not a WORLD ENDING event, it is just taken out of context by people.
The mayan calandar has actually ended BEFORE many many times... every time it does, some catastrophic event occurs... so there's no possibility it wont happen, but i doubt its the end of the world. Maybe the world as we know it.. but not the world.

Well obviously almost nothing could destroy the earth(atleast in current time), but by "ending the world as we know it," do you mean humans will die and there will be a new dominant species or just something little.

Well... basically i guess i mean... it could be All of the above... it MAY be the end of the world as we know it... I mean... maybe a new species (unlikely) maybe a few renegade human remnants to live out their lives isolated from any recognizable life... who knows. Best thing is to realize it isn't worth worrying about because it is inevitable if it will happen. Basically... if something cannot be stopped, why care that it's coming at all. Live life normally.

In the grand scheme of things.. at least we know there will always be some life (Look up Aphotic zone and Water Bears), because we (as a worldwide ecosystem) have developed to the point of extreme awesomeness and resilience.

Edit: OOPS! I looked up wiki info on the aphotic zone but it brought up no interesting information. Basically there are some organisms that rely SOLELY on the heat of rising magma in one of the sea trenches, as in no sunlight, as in they actually are an organism that doesnt fit into the whole Sunlight -> Plant -> Herbavore - > Other animals etc etc. and could potentially evolve over thousands of years and move off the magma vents in order to begin movement and slowly evolve back to the surface of the earth YAY! so the earth really isnt doomed! Ever!!!!..... well unless we manage to blow it up with nuclear missiles .. BOO!!!

Then don't post.

5. Clarity and Effort. Please do not be unnecessarily ambiguous or deceptive in your posts. It is disruptive when there is a debate spanning a large amount of posts when you could have simply explained it well at the beginning. You will be held to what you SAY, not what you MEAN. If you do not have time or are not willing to put forth the effort to fully formulate and develop an idea, don't post. Posts judged to be of a low quality will be deleted at moderation's discretion.

First, what catastrophic events? Secondly, and if you had read the posts you would have seen this already:
Quote from Mini Moose 2707

Most university astronomers and other academics specializing in Mayan studies reject the galactic alignment theory. There is no evidence in the archaeological record to demonstrate that the classical Mayan civilization attached any apocalyptic significance to the completion of the Long Count calendar.[16] Thus, the claims of Jenkins and other amateur history detectives are considered speculative at best. University of Florida astronomer Susan Milbrath, author of Star Gods of the Maya, is among those who have accused 2012 doomsday proponents of exploiting Mayan culture to advance political or personal agendas.[17] Moreover, since the nucleus of the Milky Way cannot be identified without high-powered telescopes, the Mayans could not have been aware of its location.[18] The alignment in question takes place over a 36-year period, corresponding to the diameter of the sun, with the most precise convergence having already occurred without incident in 1998.[19]

Don't continue posting like this.

Nuclear Winter?

Or maybe just an asteriod hitting us. One barely missed us very recently.

Maybe governments failing to utilize space technology properly will be the end of us?

Honestly I dont know the truth behind this, but does the Mayan Calendar say "End of the world" near 2012? Or did they just get lazy chizziling stone that they just STOPPED.

But I agree, 2012 wont be the same, I dunno if nature will be the cause, but something will do it.

The second. Mayan Calendar ends that day.

I don't believe that world end on 2012. I think Mayans were conquered that days while they were sculpting the Mayan Calendar, and they didn't really finished because spanish people prohibited them. Wacky theory, isn't it?

Indeed, the solar winds burned many forests in 2001. Maybe Mayans knew or calculated that the 2012 solar wind would be catastrophic for them (They lived between huge, very wild forests), and perhaps that the reason. Perhaps they are godlike. Who knows?

Interesting theory...

Well, I saw something on another forum I participate in and this acquaintance of mine posted something on how the Mayan Calender ends on 2012 because that's the end of the 'Universal Year'. It had a diagram with this wheel with I do believe it had either 12, or 13 different hieroglyphs in the outer ring, then I think 24, 26 in the center.. Not too sure, i'll have to talk to him about it again.

Anyways, I honestly believe that because the Mayans were very 'in tune' with the Universe and Creation and all that good stuff.

.....I think their 'gods' came and took them back to the heavens in their spaceships.

December 21st, 2012 is just the Mayan Calander's buffer overflow. No one flipped out in 1617, when the previous B'ak'tun ended and the currently one started. >>

They were as backwards and superstitious as today's religions. Human would not be smiled upon or encouraged by a higher intelligence.

Well, it seems to me like this topic has really become nothing more than some dribble about the mayan calendar, and nothing from the original post except the mayan part is even being addressed really. Sounds like time to end it.
