If you have a good wallop of common sense, and can look up stuff on google, I think you can make a more than decent trading card.
Really, you should be able to do this kind of stuff in GIMP. If you suck at GIMP and want to move onto Photoshop, I wouldn't be surprised if you met some assrape during your journey.

Photoshop is for pros.
You can do the same with with GIMP using plug-ins and such. Custom brushes, filters, etc...

As said there, I have no idea what to look for. Maybe supporting your answer with plugins that I could use, and tutorials?

I must agree and completely and 100% disagree...
GIMP, in my opinion, sucks and has a very un-user-friendly control to it.
When i first tried to learn gfx back in the day I tried GIMP first and I didn't get anywhere after downloading, installing, opening, lost...
Went and bought PS and knew what to do right away because it was so user friendly, easy to understand and easy to use.
If you really want to just make a bunch of trading cards then yes, you can easily make straight lines in PS, but you really don't need it. Look up some pixel art tuts on google and go from there.
But if your considering a future of GFX then yes, use PS and make sure you look up ALOT of tutorials for misc things on google, even if they do something you dont want to do, at least it teaches you how to do something and how to get a good outlook.

Photoshop isn't 'for the pros', they had that shit in my high school years ago.
Google Tutorials on Adobe Photoshop CS4. 'Beginner Tutorials' even.

As far as GIMP, I remember once hearing about a modified version meant to be more familiar to Photoshop users, called GIMPshop, at

Illegal Items: ROMs, .mp3s, hacks, cracks, warez, CDKeys, viruses etc.
Seeking or providing links to illegal or pirated materials is not allowed at SEN. This would include warez, ROMs, emulators, hacks, cracks, MP3s, piracy, viruses, etc. In terms of StarCraft this extends to "stolen maps", which are not allowed under any circumstances. Do not ask for any of the above, as well as CD Keys, copies of the game, or things of that nature. We don't care if you lost your CD, go buy another one. (or download from the Blizzard Store.)
Do not distribute or provide programs or links to malacious programs. SEN is not to be used for coordination of illegal activities or committing crimes. This is grounds for an instant IP ban without notice, question, or hesistation, as well as contact of your ISP in addition whatever law enforcement authorities are applicable.
I had to throw this in here before the topic closed...
None of that applies to discussing about the cracked software. Distribution does however.

Yes. It is.
Amateurs can use it, but it is a professional tool.
Also, CS4 sucks balls. I went back to CS3.

This topic technically doesn't break the rules but I'm closing it all the same because it has served its purpose.
