I came to SEN when I was about 13 (in human years) so I admit, I typed like a retarded molerat for about a year, until dashrike pointed out to me that i came off as a seven year old. I think age definitely has a lot to do with it.

I was going through Maplantis today... so much of this, "Incorrect Spelling." I didn't see much of a mature community there. Not saying there wasn't any.

Wat? We'd ban people on Maplantis if they didn't type legibly enough.

What Syphon said. Blu must have been reading a lot of Mp)Mental and ggg.

Mental is twitch, and he will argue with you about stuff that no one cares about, and happened one year ago.

It's definitely because most kids begin their typing from online games, in which anything they can do to improve their typing is done, I did the same thing, although, unlike most, I managed to switch over fairly quickly. Still, it's almost hard for me to type really badly on forums now, but as soon as I'm online, I'm as horrible as the rest of them, it's just them carrying their online language to the forums.

You guys know that while theres a huge percentage of the population use the internet while there isn't that huge percentage of students who actually pay attention in their language classes?

You don't need to pay attention in language classes to know that it's spelled "someone", not "sum1".

How is this relevant? And also don't you live in Korea? Which is why you said 'spells' instead of the proper usage 'spell'?

I believe that it is a mixture of fad, and convenience. One can think of the virtual community as the most up-to-date language fashion, and typin lyke tis is simply a fad. In fashion, we still see girls dressed horribly wrong... just because baggy jeans were in, or low cut jeans were in-fashion, no matter how big your butt was. :P Similarly, some people hold on to this way of typing as their own character.

It is also more convenient, and somewhat gives you an identity in this virtual community. Especially in a game, where your identity is solely your screen name, what you say, and maybe your playstyle, people know you for what you say. Therefore, giving more incentive to type gibberish.

neways, u can't say it aint fun typin lyke tis XD!!11

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

I sometimes think people do it to piss me off. You know what? It works.

The only time I write poorly is when I'm mad at someone writing poorly. I can't actually bring myself to type incorrectly otherwise. If I've made a mistake, and I know I've made that mistake, it's automatic for me to reach my right hand up to the backspace button!

obv

rockz. I think you have some serious issues if you get mad just by looking at people typing in chat slang.

Are things like "ME WIN" considered as an error? I consider it as a joke and use it often with SENers :O

I JUst HAvE no IDea How SomE PeopEL Tyep Liek This BeCAuse it takes so much frickin time to press the Shift or Caps Lock or whatever they press oh so often that it just doesn't make sense in any single way.

Onto the subject! I'm not exactly a native speaker of English, however as far as my memories go back, I can't recall a time when I typed in the way most of those ppl who typ u r so awesum!!11 , in fact, when I started to play RuneScape back then (about 5 years ago, that was) I actually started out like, typing out "level" and stuff like that. Although I did get used to the "lvl?" question, it was still an irritating sight to see. I was always bothered by why some people cannot type these out. It's not like it is so hard to type in those extra few letters, really.

However, some people who know how I type in english IM, know that I don't usually capitalize I, i leave the .s off the ends of the sentences and i guess i don't have a perfect grammar, it really somewhat looks like how i'm typing except when i'm extremely lazy I just don't even fix the typos. Although, usually I can feel that I hit the wrong button on my keyboard even when I'm not looking. :)

So yeah. I believe it has something to do with the original children not paying attention at school when it comes to learning how to frickin spell. I didn't have to learn a lot, usually I had the sense for what was written right or wrong. Same goes for my english spelling, I usually know how something is written without thinking way too much about it.

However, I AM STILL HUNGARIAN, therefore those who speak english natively are supposed to be able to type with even grammar than me. But they can't, they just can't. I never understood why.

Probably they are lazy, but I believe those who type like that, they are all idiots. Worthless people. Nothing more, nothing less. It's not about fastness, it's not about anything. They just can't spell, can't type. They don't know how to type some words, because the only source of their word knowledge is spoken english. And english is not exactly a language where the writeing is the same as how you say a word.

Though it really does take a lot more effort to type with abbreviations than without. Therefore, those who speak that way just don't seem to recognize how ugly it is to type like that. That's all there is to it, it really is about maturity and the lack of knowledge. Teachers should bash grammar and spelling down the throat of all those 10-11 year old children. I used to be Rank 4 in the Spelling Competition (city-wise). :P If I can be, than anyone else can be as well.

he said writing, not typing. Typing does not necesarily mean typing sentences, it could mean typing a word.

This discussion has been reduced to "OMG DON'T YOU HATE THIS OR THAT?" I don't consider it much of a discussion. The reasons behind obnoxious typing habits are pretty obvious as well.
