So yeah, happy Diwali. I can't celebrate it because candles and fireworks are prohibted on my college campus :( . I also had to take the PSAT today (yeah, 8:15 on a saturday and a national holiday).

Hooray for India! :D

Anyone know what fun Indian holiday is going to be next?

Triumph of good over evil within us? That's worth celebrating.

Blah, my mom was like "GO TAKE A SHOWER SO WE CAN EAT TOGETHER!" I took a shower, but we didn't eat together. ;O I hate these Indian holidays... They force people to do stupid things like fast or limit themselves to certain foods, and they're all really stupid. I especially hate how my mom cares so much about her religion. :\

I have yet to see an Indian holiday that involves fasting or only eating certain foods. And what does your mom have to do with this topic?

Read the links... it's celebrated by lighting a bunch of lights (usually candles) and blowing up a bunch of firecrackers, and the exchange of gifts. Sort of like a comination of Independence Day and Christmas.

Oh, please. Almost every Indian holiday (maybe not exactly holidays, but events) causes them to fast. Nobody really lights candles... In fact, in my 15 years of living, I've never seen any of my family members do that. At most, we've turned on all the house lights for a brief period, and then we turn them off.

Relatively ancient and inactive

I think there's a limit to how many holidays a people can celebrate. Not sure we Americans have reached the limit yet, but just saying, we shouldn't celebrate every little thing. Hell, I bet we'll get 9/11 school off at some point.

Are you trying to claim that some of your family members are Indian?

I'm not buying it. Some of the things you've said to me on b.net were distinctly anti-Indian, how could you be Indian yourself?

He once tried to convince me that Indians are all dirt poor and that they don't have toilets in India, and now he's telling me that they fast for every holiday. I doubt he has ever talked to an Indian, let alone have any as relatives.

Of course, I could be wrong, maybe he lived in a particularly bad part of India or something.

And why are people acting like "Indian" is a religion? India is incredibly multi-cultural and not everybody there celebrates the same holidays...

And Jesusfreak, it's pretty damned clear that demonslayer is anti-indian because of his Indian heritage.

Ah, sorry. I figured that since America forces everyone to celebrate it's religious holidays, India would probably be similar, seeing that their population is like 80% Hindu. Shows how smart I am :(.

He' anti-Indian because he's Indian? Ah, you mean sort of like how I hate America because I grew up in it and learned all the bad things about it?

Yes, JesusFreak, I AM Indian. They seriously do not have toilets in middle-class homes in India... It's like a hole that you pee in. O.o

Ah, I see. When you said it, it sounded like you were stereotyping them all for being poor. Are these holes like the things they had back in the old days when the "bathroom" was separate from the rest of the house and you had to have someone clean out the hole every now and then?

I remember reading on wikipedia once that India has one of the fastest growing economies in the world, and read somewhere else that they'll probably be the second most powerful nation in the world within a few years or a couple decades (with China being the first). Does that sound about right? O_O

Also... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhinga_Gavar
Quote
The girls and women observing fast of Dhinga Gavar known as Teejania carrying sticks in their hands virtually rules the road on this night.Though enough police is deployed but little intervention is needed and crowed finds its own equilibrium of discipline.Boys to get a "lucky strike" go near girls and sometimes tease them to get beaten up by decorated sticks.

This is the only festival which gives equal rights to all kinds of women. In this festival even a widow can also take part.
(Yeah, I know that wikipedia needs to work on its grammar, lol :bleh: )
I want to do something based off this on my college campus for Valentine's Day (Dhingha Gavar is conveniently located in the Hindu month of Phagun, which I think is around February if I remember correctly), but I can't find the sticks. Do you know where I can get the sticks used for the holiday? Are the sticks something special, like made out of some rare kind of wood and blessed by a priest, or are they just sticks?
