I would be a Mapping Columnist, as it stands now, I already do my best to keep up with the innovations in Mapping.
If nobody steps up to the plate after a long period of time, I would be the head. For now, I'll offer my services as a regular Columnist. Contact: PM here is preferable, although my email is krolowaz@gmail.com ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I can work in the mapping section. My grammar and spelling is up to par, and I've been map making since 2001. If it deals with reviewing, criticizing, or recommending a map, I think I would be able to work well in that area. I can also write to give insight with trigger help and tips to help improve the mapping community.

For anyone who wants to be a columnist - you need to have a column to write. Don't just say "I want to be a columnist;" come up with an idea for the column you want to do.

Regarding the columns:
In the original thread I had made a suggestion to allow anyone to submit any sort of article they want to write (making it really community based and open-ended), and then leave it up to Layout Manager and Editor-in-Chief to decide what that issue would pertain to. I still think this might be a better choice. This would seem to make each issue seem fresh and interesting rather than expecting to read about the same topics every fortnight. One issue could solely be about modding, and we could use various excerpts from the "How to Write a Mod" threads as well as techniques to create textures, or tips to make very cool looking ships (all written by various "guest writers," theoretically). Another could be about UMS fads like bounds, old defense maps (more referring to all the Cannon D/SunkenD/Turret D clones rather than the genius that would come out of SoftWarewolf or Oo.Vic.oO), golems, mass arenas, etc. complete with interviews of prominent map makers et al. General news would be included in both, obviously, but I feel that having set columns for each issue will make it drab after a while. And frankly, I'm afraid that having set people as section heads and specific writers under them may turn this into nothing more than a fad. People get really lazy. Just a thought. Quote from the original thread: EDIT: And if this doesn't pick up, I'd like to contribute as a column writer about old StarCraft fads. EDIT2: Once I get back to work (hopefully in a month), I may also ask to contribute as a news writer every once and a while. I have a "source" who knows an awful lot about Blizzard, and Blizzard games. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() CURRENTLY WORKING ON Shadowlands | Demonic: Urban Apocalypse Invasion: Ares | Recon | OMG TEH ZOMBIES!!! |

A good point here as to features. Perhaps we can divide three ways: news, columns, and the issue's feature. The non-column sections have staff writers that just work on whatever stories they are assigned. I don't think the magazine will be very cohesive if it's just any article by anyone, but it's easier to move around if there are ACTIVE section heads who assign various stories to their staff writes, whoever those writers may be. I guess I see what you mean about laziness, but if everyone is lazy nothing is going to get done anyway. The way I see it, you write to end up on the staff list. If you don't write, you get taken off. It's just a list for contact and credit purposes. There's no set time when you have to "join" the staff, after which you're locked out. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "Three can keep a secret, if two are dead." -Benjamin Franklin

Well, I'd be willing to write some stuff. I could do features or news, or a column if I could think of anything. If I do news, though, I'll need sources. >.>
Maybe a Quote of the Week column in terms of Starcraft, or SC2 news... Contact: PM, MSN (thenumber1ninja at hotmail), AIM (shadowdragonmst), Steam (Erithom, display name is =(e)=™ Erithom (Erik)). Preferred would be MSN or Steam. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Scratch that. I'd be happy to do a Released Map Reveiw Column, for all of the newly released maps. I can spend some time with the people who made them, even test it to get some inside features and starting off Strategy suggestions. Same contact info. (I'm still availible to be a copy editor.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

To anyone who wants to help work on this paper: please volunteer/apply for any of the following positions explicitly. So far I've just seen vague "I could do this/I might be interested in that". Please be very specific and only volunteer for one staff writing position and/or apply for one management position. Positions marked with an asterisk (*) are managerial single-chair jobs. They will be open to application and review by whoever the hell is in charge of this thing. Positions without an asterisk are just staff rosters and you can join one (if needed, maybe more than one).
Open Content-Related Positions Section Head: News* Description: The News section head is responsible for managing news articles and organizing the News section. He needs to assign news writers to cover stories he sees fit to report about, and is the editor for style and slant in news articles. He organizers the staff writers into a team to cover whatever is newsworthy for the next issue. Section Heads are responsible for submitting final drafts of articles in their section to the Copy Editor for copy editing. News Staff Writers Description: The News staff writers are the members of the team that the section head leads. They work together to produce news articles for publication on recent events related to Starcraft/Starcraft 2. Staff writers can sniff out news themselves or be assigned a story by their section head; how individual stories are started is left up to the section head. Section Head: Feature* Description: The Feature section head is in charge of producing a feature for each issue. The feature should include several articles around a theme, which will probably be prominent on the front cover. The Feature section head will work in conjunction with the Editor-In-Chief to develop a feature for each issue, and work with his staff to come up with articles to write. Section Heads are responsible for submitting final drafts of articles in their section to the Copy Editor for copy editing. Feature Staff Writers Description: The Feature staff writers work with their section head to develop stories for each feature. The exact workings of the Feature team is up to the section head. Columnists Description: Columnists produce a column for each issue on a subject or theme. The column should be consistent in focus yet refreshingly new each issue. Columns usually are written from the first person point of view, unlike the rest of a newspaper, although this is not a requirement. Columns also often include opinion, but again not a requirement. Columnists are responsible for submitting their own drafts to the Copy Editor for editing and work directly with the Editor-In-Chief in the event of any content issues. When volunteering to be a columnist, you MUST provide a coherent idea for the column you would like to write. A name would be useful, but is not required. Design Staff Description: Members of the Design Staff serve as lackeys under the Layout Manager to help create images and set the magazine for publication. The format and function of the Design Staff will be determined by the Layout Manager. Please volunteer for a specific Staff position and/or apply to be only one section head. We also seem to be in need of an Editor-In-Chief; this can be worried about somewhere else. My working model for production is like this (times are assuming biweekly publication): -Editor-In-Chief confers with the Section Heads about what's going in to the next issue (13 days to press) -Section Heads confer with their staff teams and divy up work for articles. Staff gets to work writing articles (12-13 days to press) -DEADLINE: Columnists submit their columns to the Copy Editor and Section Heads submit their section's articles to the Copy Editor (4 days to press) -Copy Editor irons out copy editing in articles for publication, works back and forth with writers to fix any disagreements (2-4 days to press) -DEADLINE: Copy Editor submits all final articles to the Layout Manager (2 days to press) -Layout Manager directs Design Staff to typeset the issue, and then publishes and distributes the magazine (though an official outlet if necessary) (DONE at press time) The Editor-In-Chief and members of the Board can inspect any article as needed in this process. I am adding this to the first post as well. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "Three can keep a secret, if two are dead." -Benjamin Franklin

Sounds great! But I don't know how many Design Staff I would really need helping me... my job is kind of a one man job ya know? I'll try and handle everything by myself, and if it ends up I do need help, then we can go from there. If more than one person is doing different pages or whatever, the magazine wouldn't be very consistent.

It's completely up to you, but I didn't know if you could say "here, so and so, make this image for me". If you don't need anyone we won't hire any.

I'd like to write a column every once and a while, but as LoveLess points out it seems like more of a freelance gig. When I have the time and a suitable story (i.e. my StarCraft fad idea), I'll pitch it to a section head.
