I remember the most awesome homework problem a few years where we had to work out how to graph a slinky in parametric coordinates (x(t), y(t)).

A bliss in proof, and proved, a very woe;
Before, a joy proposed; behind, a dream.
All this the world well knows; yet none knows well

We never use our book in Algebra I (well, we do for homework...). So I have to go home every night, read up on what he was talking about, and do my homework that way.

I too hate how he requires us to write down how we did it. His way of thinking is if we did our homework (WHETHER IT BE RIGHT OR WRONG) and wrote out how to do it then we passed our homework for that night :|

Most teachers (all subjects) don't grade normal homework. It's not like you have to actually write out the work you were supposed to do, if you just write down some random work that takes up space (seeing as how he doesn't check it) that'll do. At the most they'll look it over briefly to make sure it isn't total bs and gave grades between check minus, check, check plus. Are you in eighth grade or a freshman?

I always want to lynch the about one in twelve teachers I get that attempt to grade homework for accuracy.

Yea, grading homework on accuracy is the most bullshit ever. I really haven't had a teacher who does that. Certain assignments of course need to be graded, for example if you're writing an essay which you hand it to be graded but it's done at home, duh. But for subjects like math, the general homework that is given out daily should never be graded. It's mainly for practice anyway, and the point is that if you aren't able to do the homework you are able to ask about it in class. You're mainly graded on participation, doing the homework, and tests/quizzes.

I love how our current math teacher does it.

We get a few problems. Around 4 or 5. We usually can get it done in class. It's not really graded. It's very short and are problems that the majority of class have a hard time with.

I think math should only be graded by test, there should be no credit for homework. You should however be able to retake any test once, for any reason.

That sounds good, if there is nothing tricky about a problem, then there is no point doing it. It is better to figure it out for yourself tho.

I loved how MY math teacher used to be like. He just gave us work to do, did nothing painstaking as to take notes, keep track of worksheets, and a weekly "pop quiz". I have no problems with math. It's fun, and entertaining, time consuming. Although, I don't really like proofs, making us prove some equations.
Math solving speeds only depend on how much practice and experience you had on a particular math subject. So when you can solve 100 problems in 1 hour, another person might do it within 30 minutes.

100 problems in an hour, what is the point of something so simple, don't you get the point after the first 10? I remember some problems that took several sheets of paper to finish.

To reduce the chances of you making careless mistakes. Sure you would get the point conceptually, but to prevent yourself from unconsciously making a careless mistake when actually doing the problems like on a test or something, doing scores of problems seriously helps reduces the risks. It's kind of like practicing shooting basketballs into the basket. If you make 10 shots, you can't just say "Ok i'm ready for this! I will not miss anymore shots now!" You have to keep practicing.

I disagree, repetition is a horrible way to learn things that have an underlying principle, repetition is good for learning factiods, not so much for math. The best way to learn math is constant building, There were things about algebra I forgot until i took calculus, now I doubt I will ever forget them.

Quote from DapperdanI still do the work if it is required of me, but I just don't like it being required. I still get A's in every math class ever. Most of the problems that you can do in your head but have be shown on the paper are relatively short (not too annoying to write out) anyways.

QuoteWhy should I have to show:

3x-4=4x-3
-4x+3x-4+4=4x-4x-3+4 (this is the step I hate the most in basic algebra, it makes the equation more confusing)
-x=1
x=-1

When I could just write down x=-1? :/

I did that shit in 7th grade, and it's hardly anything when it comes to having to show work. And spineshealth, the second line is just him showing really poorly how to subtract 4x and adding 4 to both sides to get x on one side(which isn't even the easiest way to do it).

HOLY
SHIT

WHY, just tell m WHY does every second person misspell my name, and ALWAYS in this way? WHYYYYY?

Oh, btw, thanks for telling me what he did there; guess I wouldn't have noticed - having had Maths and Physics as intensive courses, being the second best in Maths/Phsics of my former classmates, graduating as 6th best or so of my school etc...

Yeah, the additional 'L' bothered me - WHY?

Also: ALL the people I know just write '| +4' (for example) to the right of a line instead of writing that whole line again with that stuff on both sides... Shows just as well (or even better since it's less clustered) what you did.

I have a math teacher FaRTy wishes was his. No homework, EVER!!! Just daily mental math, weekly quizes, and monthly tests. It is awesome. My math teacher understands everyone really well, and can explain what you are doing wrong easily.
The reason we don't have homework is because "Why mark you on something you are just learning to do?".

And, the only thing I hate about math would be how I know them as "Honest John" questions.

"If you have 100 apple trees, each grows 20 apples. Every tree you add, each tree grows one less apple. How many trees do you have to have to have the greatest apple income."

Have to make a quadratic equation.
(100+x)(20-x)
Then simplify it, and find the maximum.

Right now, I'm doing Limits in Calculus.
Thanks!

Lol, Mellennium's topic... Anyway my math teacher hates it when we ask, "When are we going to use this in the real world?"

I'm only in 7th grade and I know that that stuff is important.

QuoteIf you have 100 apple trees, each grows 20 apples. Every tree you add, each tree grows one less apple. How many trees do you have to have to have the greatest apple income.

but the question never states that removing a tree will cause the rest to grow more apples.
If it did the optimum number of trees would be 60.

y'=0 is the maximum

y=120x - x2
y'=120-2x
2x=120
x=60

so if you have 100, you need to chop 40 down.

but if you are on limits still, your teacher might not accept that.
and it should be y = (120-x)(x)
y=apples x=trees
y=(number of apples/tree)(number of trees)
