Hey, I've been searching for a new ISP for a few days now and simply wanted to know what you guys would recommend. My current ISP (AT&T) has ripped me off. My parents have been paying $35+ for a 206 kbps connection (23 Kilobytes).
I would prefer:
- A DSL, with a land line phone bundle.
- No more than $50 a month.
- Above 5 mbps download speed.
I was particularly interested in Verizon FiOS, however it is not available in my area.
My basic question here is: what ISP do you have, and what are its benefits?

None.
Bright House aka road runner.
Make sure you look into some basic rules of the ISP before you get it, I tried setting up a server with Cox, and later found out they were blocking connections through port 80.
None.
Bright House isn't available for me.
Thanks for the tip Falkoner.
Out of curiosity, I do have another question. Does my Computer's CPU or RAM have any affect on how fast my download speed is?

None.
Yeah, this is what I am paying for:
http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=10938I believe that about 15% of internet speed is immediately taken off due to distance though.
Verizon and Qwest also have Fiber optic services available that go up to 20 mbps.
None.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charter_Communicationsthat is my cable company. There is no dsl in my area (they tell me Im like 1000 ft too far away to get it)
I pay $55 dollars a month and i get great service.
I am a Mathematician
Charter is also road runner, I believe.
Road runner is nice. Skip DSL, look for whatever cable company is in your area.
None.
Difference:
DSL - Private Line, constant speed and access only to your house, and recipients through your router.
Cable - Generally faster, but if more people on your block have it, they all leach of that one box, and your internetz be slowz.
Generally, you will find that Cable is faster. Where I live, we use this:

None.
You can get DSL above 5 mbps? All the DSL I see advertised is 2mbps if you're lucky. Then, Comcast is the leading high-speed provider out here. I get decent service, but their customer service is really bad.
I have 3.5mbps from AT&T, however it is still ran by their affialate company Bellsouth ;o

The problem with that is, out here where I live, Comcast Cable is the only cable internet available and everyone uses it. I prefer DSL over cable for that reason.
So I think I have chosen the company I am going to go with.
Does anyone have any recommendations for some good modems and/or routers?
None.
I got a 2wire thats never let me down, if thats the kinda recomendation you need.

The only problem with Cable is that it gets slower depending on how many people around you have it, so before you get Cable, check your neighbor's to see if they have it
If they don't it should be lightning fast, mine has slowly gotten slower over the years as more and more people switch to it, and it's bugging me..
None.
I got this for a router to replace a dying one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127060It's very nice and seems to have a sexy relationship with my 360 without me having to do anything. It's lighter than my cables though so that's somewhat annoying ;o
I would avoid linksys.
As for a modem, normally the company provides one?
None.
