I was thinking, there are all these different versions of Cat and Mouse... but I want to try something. Lets say you make a really really fun map, and you add a load of extra features. But what would happen if you take out all those extra features, and make it completely open source. It would be like the Linux OS for Mappers.

So basically, you want to have a template of the maps with billions of versions so people can create a billion more versions with ease? In my opinion templates are awful since they remove uniqueness of maps, and the only one I really know of is an RP template.

So Falkoner you support map cracking, but not open source... what?

He's right though. Templates for RP maps are the only useful ones.

one of the most illogical/hypocritical things i have ever heard. OSMAP serves EXACTLY this purpose; it gives you a completed map which you can modify, ala a template.

I am not. I am just against using templates to make maps as they create the same basic map over and over, OS Map allows you to learn from maps, a template is just a slate for you to fill in.

Not only that they aren't learning much from it :l.

Meh, I say for a simple map that can have a template, just go ahead and make it yourself, the ultimate way to prevent plagiarism.

All right, than I'm going to host a contest, I'll make a template, than see who can rig it out the most. This would be a great trigger contest.. hmm..

I suppose a template would help out the less skilled mapmakers make a good map which fits the theme of the contest, since the groundwork is laid for them. However, I think some more skilled mapmakers might find starting a map based off your template a little more of a hindrance with conflicting triggering methods/styles and such.

Yes, a template is mostly locations and terrain, and any triggers are fully finished so you don't have to edit them.

Yes, but sometimes having to edit something is more work than just making it from scratch.

Yes, but sometimes it takes more work to get used to working with the locations and terrain someone has laid out than if you were to make it yourself. With triggers someone has already created you never know if you have to edit them or not, and even if you don't it may also take more time to understand someone else's triggers than if you made them yourself.

Of course this problem could be alleviated if Akar made copious amounts of very descriptive and self-documenting comments and triggers.

I can see locations being annoying to work with, not terrain though.

Most of the time when you make something yourself you understand it more than if someone else made it for you. This can be applied to terrain, especially if it's a really big map, or there are many details or quirks which someone just looking at it might overlook while if you made it yourself you would be aware of them.

Yeah, I like to think out my systems before i implement them, if i edit someone else's triggers I end up rewriting them from scratch.
I do not respect your beliefs, and I implore you not to respect mine. To ask respect of beliefs held without evidence, is to burn the books of progress and hope.

You See, I am a Strong OSMAP Supporter, All IC here is this guy asking if its koo to leave a map "template" open source which is the same as editing CAT N Mouse "BLAH BLAH Version". Heres my thought: Do what YOU want to DO. If you want Open the map you want and Edit it your Way. Just Note that your doing something that will negatively impact the mapping community but its your decision. You have the right to open any map in the scm. or scx. format the same way I can edit and anyone else can edit any map they want. Just remember all Csmappers, the maps and all those files belong to BLIZZARD. So dont go around claiming map pixels as rightfully yours. They Belong to Blizzard.

Im not involving OSMAP so dont start Flamming.

Well at least you see me doing things to solve this Protection vs. Unprotection battle. Everyone else seems to just be arguing about it.
