I was having an argument with a rather rude player on bnet today, and I wanted to ask the question here. I always save the game to find the lagger and it always seems to work. I did that in a game today, found the lagger, and they left. Then, one of the players went nuts saying that doesn't work and it only shows the speed of their hard drive which has nothing to do with lag. He called me an idiot moron and a child....but anyways. If he is correct, why does this always work. I just want this clarified for future use.

Thanks in advance.

Can someone move this topic? I posted in the wrong section on accident (obviously this isn't SCII related).

Thanks,

It has always worked for me and there is always an idiot that says it doesnt work. I think there may be a connection with hard drive speed and connection speed. If you have a slow harddrive, then you are going to lag since the game runs of off said hard drive. But, it also shows how well the internet connection is between your computer and that of your opponents.

It works 1/2 times for me. Anyways when I try to save a game in a game then it lags for me and then it saves. It sometimes shows the lagger but not always.

It's a matter of what happens when you save the game. Either every player does it independently, or the host does it then transfers it to the other players to ensure everyone has the same file. If they do it independently, then the most it can report is CPU lag (where you have such a crappy computer you can't run the game quick enough). If it is transfered, then the file transfer strains their connection and that is why they would lag.

I don't think it transfers the file since the games have to be synchronized and thus the saved files the same even doing it independently. However, it might have to wait until receives an 'end of saving' order from every computer, and since they all will take almost the same time to save the file to the disk... dunno...

Someone did a save game then pause combination that appeared to amplify the effect. Before the usual save game checking wasn't being helpful. It could have been an isolated instance though.

Just another SC/bnet mystery to me.

It will sometimes detect lag that is caused by slow computer, but is worthless for finding connection caused lag.

I noticed when I'm on my '99 Dell, I always show as the lagger. I think Clokr_'s got the right idea on what is actually happening.

I'd ask DoA, but he's not on MSN right now.
It's Friday night and I'm a man! I'm not going to sit here all night. I'm going out to meet me a girl who's smart and sexy and has big ovaries!

Clokr_ got it right, a slow computer will lag because it takes longer to save the file to the computer as it takes longer to process the downloaded information.

I don't know why you guys are saying 'slower hard drive' because it's either less memory/RAM or a slow processor.

This is just another myth of B.Net, like how people think that everyone needs to set their latency, when really, when one person changes it they all change, and how some people don't realize that low latency is the best. Basically, most B.Net users are complete retards, and have no idea how to use a computer.

Yeah, it irritates me every time some noob will save to find the lagger. I have like 60 saves "WHO IZ DA LAGR" "WHO HAZ FISHHER PRICE MOEDM" "LAGDAR v5.0," etc. Also, too bad Moose missed this topic, he loves explaining it.

You guys all think that it is just 1 person that causes lag. You're wrong. Lag is two or more computers having bad connections with eachother. There is always TWO possibilities of solving the lag.

A) Ban the person you see lagging.
B) Ban the person who the person you see is lagging sees lagging.

I go into games a lot of times, and they always see me lagging. I sometimes am able to tell the host about how it works, and if they actually listen, then he is able to actually make a decision about this. (hmm, matt is a better player, lets keep him here, and ban the other dude. YAy all fixed, thanks matt!) That almost works everytime.

There is also a problem here. Sometimes there is lag between 1 and 2 people, so if you ban the 2 people, the lag will stop, but also if you just ban the 1 person it will stop. You need to be able to find out who is lagging, and who is causing it.

I remember somewhere had a tutorial about everything, I think it was SC Legacy, but it's down right now. And no, it isn't always between 2 people, often you get someone with a slow connection or a slow computer and they just lag everyone.

Well, if it is like that.. Then ban everybody but the person you see, and lag is gone. That is atleast 2 people. Two comps can't lag eachother.. there isn't anything to lag..

in instances that it does not work, it usually means that 2 or more players have conflicting internet.

LOL, I was the person always yelling that saving doesn't work. Oops. :P
And the stance that we take isn't much to bear
Yeah, we leave things to change on their time
And our failure to care for it leaves us blind
'til we're tired and we're crazed in the mind

Often it doesn't work, sometimes when people are lagging it shows somebody else, that often happens to me, but about 98% of the time, the person that lags afterwards IS the person that lags in game.
