I have a major problem with our current classifications on melee.
Our current classification currently is... Competition, Un-competition, and Melee Style.
Every melee game is competition. I won't touch Melee Style because it's up to you guys to decide where it belongs, UMS or Melee (obviously UMS). And it can't be easily sorted like this.
The fixed solution should be: League, Non-league, Alternative, and (Melee Style)
League: Maps that were used for proleagues, MSL, EVER or english familiar WGT, WCG, and ICCup. Or otherwise made by people who specialize in melee maps for leagues similar to the stated above
Non-league: Player made maps, most likely amateur in aspect but does not have any modified gameplay through special map editor's capability. The terrain should be somewhat more strategical than boxes that are connected to middle.
Alternative: Melee maps that have things out of place for a normal melee game. ( Such as stacked minerals, minerals and gas that do not run out for long, square terrain.
Melee Style: Generally states a UMS map that has melee aspects in it.

I don't really care as much as you, but it makes a lot of sense like this.
None.
Yeah, I've talked to Moose about the sucky melee categories. Take a look at the tags they use. Ewwwww.
The problem isn't as much of the system as it is people using the system.
On both SEN/Maplantis, everytime that we had categories like "Professional" or whatever open for people to submit to, many people put their maps into there when they clearly weren't supposed to be in there. Everyone loves to think that their map is Professional or League quality (as if the leaguers come onto mapping sites and pick a random map to download - INSTANT FAME!),
People sometimes are lazy and just plop their map into the "other" category, and thats bad enough as it is.
One solution I had is getting someone to manually move them, but really, whats the point in that anyway? We're just a map making site, we aren't really designed to be the source on your professional maps.

Well, if we could get someone who knows his way about melee to do the transferring, I don't see any reason not to do it. Whatever helps.
None.
Isn't that elitism anyway? The thing you guys hate?
None.
As per the
other topic, the role of elitism is under re-examination.
I will be redoing the categories of the DLDB in due time. I hadn't visited there much until recently, but I am now aware of a need for new organization.
I guess you could make it so that when a user submits their map 'professionally', it will not show up until approved by the dldb keeper.
We have enough DLDB Keepers to keep that under control (once they get their powers coded).
Anyway, non-competition sounds dumb. Can we use "Amateur" or "Casual"?
Casual would work. And I don't think of these as any kind of elitism. The maps are sorted into league and whatsoever to sort out which is what and what is what. Usually that way, you'd find what you'd need faster.
I had purposely named it so it is a league map. If it hasn't been made by one of the guys that makes those maps and be uploaded onto their official site, it isn't a league map. Any player made map that doesn't have style of play drastically altered by 'fastest' style would go on alternative, and melee maps with triggers (exempting obs mode) should go into melee style.
What kind of elitism is this?
None.
I agree with Bedazed. I don't see how elitism matters at all in this. If a map is played in an actual professional league then it's a league map. All other maps go under non-league. What this basically means is that any map that has been made by someone at SEN is pretty much a non-league map. It's not elitism, it's a categorization based on the fact that certain maps are actually used in professional leagues. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether "melee style" is necessary. I think it should just go under UMS if that's the case. And the DLDB moderators would be able to manage the transfer of maps, although we could give DLDB power to someone who knows which maps are league maps.
The point is there should be no discrepancy between what is a league map and what isn't a league map so it shouldn't be an issue. If the map is played in one of the leagues Bedazed mentioned then it's a league map. All other maps fall under non-league, end of story.
None.
Then we might as well not even give submitters the option of submitting it as League.
Simple: If someone submits it as league, it has to be approved by a moderator. If someone keeps uploading shit to that particular place, they lose that privilege.
You're thinking of league as a hard category rather than something defined by tags... we can just fine and otherwise penalize though who try to submit to league. There are enough DLDB Keepers to notice what's going on in there. It's just a matter of IP coding their powers.
