Well, I have never used Gimp before. But this is about 30 minutes of my hard labouring away. Is it readable? It's for a web technology course I'm doing at uni (because I'm an r-tard and can't be bothered doing any serious course just to get credit points).

Looks nice, except the weird thing behind the U and S looks slightly offputting. Not sure whether you should remove or just move it somewhere else.

Yeah - the instructions were to put an ampersand (one of these: & ) behind the text. I guess the idea was that it somewhat resembles a treble clef or some other musical notation. It clearly doesn't and I agree. I couldn't align or position it in anyway that didn't detract the attention from the 'music' text.

Anyone knowledgeable about Photoshop / Gimp - is this the most effective workflow to create custom text? It seemed really long-winded and involved a shit-tonne of layers.
1. Create each letter of text on a separate layer
2. Apply a bunch of effects to each letter on each layer
2.1 Drop Shadow
2.2 Bevel & Emboss
2.3 Outer Glow
2.4 Stroke
2.5 - Repeat for U, S, I, C and the '&' sign.
3. Duplicate background wooden texture to new layer
3.1 Move new layer above the stack of effects for the 'M' layer.
4. Alpha to Selection on the letter 'M' layer.
5.1 Invert the selection
5.2 Merge this selection into the new duplicated wooden layer
6. Merge the wooden layer down one level with the first 'M' effect.
7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 for all letters and the & sign...
8. Alpha to selection on the letter 'M' layer.
8.1 Shrink selection by 5 pixels
8.2 Fill selection with a white foreground colour
8.3 Select an ellipse-like section of the lower half of this new layer
8.4 Delete the new selection.
8.5 Apply a gaussian blur to the filled layer
9. Repeat steps 8 to 8.5 for all leters and & sign.

Then a tonne of steps and editing on the imported pattern image.

Just to create a custom text? Is this normal? Did it just take so long because I was new at the program?

That's fairly normal, although plenty of people would create the text all in one layer.

You can alt+drag layer filters, that should save you time.

You might want to try making an anime vector. You got the skills.

It's nice of you to say that xD I do prefer traditional art. I'm actually going to start a watercolor project soon here. Our living room needs some art on the wall.

Cool. Watercolor is hard because you have to plan out white or light areas ahead of time.

You might want to try gouache because you can paint over your mistake. It's essentially half watercolor and half acrylic.

I don't like guache for that reason. I do have some, though. But I do have masque, and assuming it hasn't completely dried out then I'll just use that on the white/light spots before I start painting. xD
