I have a really crappy ME computer, that won't run IE.6 or IE.7, so i got Fx. I was hoping with the upgrade to Fx i could download msn, but no such luck, it needs IE.6. Since there is so many Fx users on SEN, i was wondering what u guys do. Do u guys use MSN? if so, how?

We just use firefox?
If MSN = messeneger, then use trillian.
I'd install win98:se as well, if you could.

Trillian sucks, no ability for handwriting, play mini games, custom smilies, winks, all the exclusive stuff.

I use Firefox and I'm able to download it... I think you need Windows Vista or XP.

Um, why the hell would you want to handwrite on a program you just want to CHAT on? Why are custom smilies so important? ..and the winks are fucking retarded.

If you just want to chat, trillian is good for that. (lol unintentional but catchy rhyme)

I am honestly planning on making a chatting program with no extra features or any unnecessary extra GUI additions whatsoever for people who don't really want that shit.

I don't need any reason, after all since those things actually help a lot. Plus I don't think Trillian is up-to-date whenever a message is sent to you. Despite the long waiting whenever I have a conversation with IP and other people.

But he has WinME. MSN vs Trillian discussion for him is pointless if at least xp is required ^^

Handwriting is for when I'm talking to people about math things.

Also, YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE ICQ?!1

The official client also supports offline messages, which Trillian is completely incompatible with on the MSN protocol. If you use MSN on Trillian, you will randomly just not get messages from people or people will randomly not get your messages. As soon as you log into the official client, you get all of those messages you missed from when you were using Trillian. The offline messages feature really makes it a whole lot more reliable as far as how many messages you receive of the ones that were sent to you.

The only thing Trillian really has over the official client is that if you are using logging, Trillian saves the messages immediately, where the official client only saves them when you close the chat window (meaning you lose everything in the window if it happens to crash). If the official client ever was changed to save messages immediately into the logs, I would immediately start using it as my main IM medium. For some chats I switched to using Yahoo on Trillian instead of MSN on the official client solely for this reason.

If you really want to use Trillian, then I'd recommend using it with either a Yahoo (on the latest Trillain version) or ICQ account; it supports offline messages on no other protocols than those, from my experiments. Hopefully the newer Trillian version will fix this (which is currently in the alpha or beta stage).

Doesn't ICQ have some extra features? I don't know, I haven't used it since like honestly 1997, lol. Bleh, the size of the one I'd make would be like.. 20KB, :P

I had ME in england and I was fully capable of running MSN, I think what you are doing is trying to get the newest version of msn (Windows Live Messenger) and your computer cannot handle it... There are msn's before that, which will indefinitely work. also, there's a website which acts as a messenger, just google "messenger fx" and you can login and chat...

Also, get a newer comp :P

ShadowFlare, under "Options" (Alt + T, Alt + O), click the "Messages" category. Put a check on "Automatically keep a history of my conversations" under the "Message History" section.

Plus I censored my nickname that my wife named me. ^^

Another BIG difference is that trilliant doesn't have a lot of bugs. MSN client has buffer overflows everywhere and even crashes randomly.

On the other hand, the free trillian version doesn't allow you to maintain several accounts as separate lists as I'd like to do with my aim and msn ones...

That won't work. What shadowflare meant is that if msn crashes before you close a conversation window, you lose it's contents, since it only archieves the conversation at the moment you click the 'X'.

I've also had Trillian crash occasionally (I'm using no addons other than any that are preinstalled with it), but unlike the MSN client, I don't lose my current chat, so it doesn't matter as much when it does happen. A limitation of Trillian, at the moment, is that it doesn't use any up-to-date protocols on anything, so each client plugin has at least something that it doesn't support. The MSN and AIM plugins don't support offline messages, the Yahoo plugin doesn't work with chat rooms or file transfers anymore (as far as I can tell) and doesn't support communication with MSN users unlike the official client (and in turn, the MSN plugin doesn't support communication with Yahoo users), and the ICQ plugin can no longer update your profile info for your account (it has a save option you can see, but it doesn't really work). Also various other features with video and audio may not work at all anymore, as well as various other features for each of the protocols not ever having been implemented.

Haha, the current version of Trillian is fairly easy to crack for someone who has the right disassembler and at least some experience with reading assembler (no I'm not giving out my copy, ever). I'm hoping it is still just as easy when they release the newer version, called something like Trillian Astras.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant. I do have the automatic logging enabled already. If Microsoft wanted to fix that, it would be extremely easy to fix, and they could have it optional for those cases where you wouldn't want to use it. (not exactly a good idea to write the logs so often if they would be stored on a flash drive, for example)

To do so, they could just increment LastSessionID in the file when the first new message in the new window is written to the file (LastSessionID is normally incremented each time you close a window that has new messages, basically each new session). Then for each message, strip </Log> from the end of the file, append the message, and add the </Log> back to the end. This probably wouldn't really even require much work to implement.

Heh, I might give it a try.
EDIT: Hmm, anyway if it is so unupdated I'll probably wait until the new version gets out.

Does the official msn client allow the user to overwrite user display names? That's the biggest reason I use trillian.
