I'm sure you guys are all sick to hell of all these "help my sibling get a laptop" threads, but my sister actually does need a new laptop. ;o She's been using a shitty Dell Inspiron 1521 for the last four years and, to put it lightly, this thing is absolutely terrible. It freezes immediately on startup, it freezes as soon as I open firefox, it freezes repeatedly while surfing the web, and I swear half the software is broken. She's going to grad school in the fall, and I really think she needs a new comp.



BUDGET - ~$700 would be nice.
I've found some laptops that may be good, but I'm not sure how reliable they are. I've looked at a bunch of HP ones, but I'm not sure about the other brands. How's Acer? Asus? Are they good?

I don't think there's any laptop manufacturer you should really stay away from. They'd go out of business if that were really the case, as we have seen with OCZ's RAM division.

Well sometimes I like to help, contrary to what you think. nine times out of ten, a freezing/crappy laptop ends up being user error - they're hard on it, get viruses, or download/save all sorts of crap to the point the computer can't handle it.

I like my Acer, which I bought for $300. I want to upgrade soon, but that's less out of necessity and more out of my needs have changed. For one, I'm not lugging a laptop to school, and I don't do a lot of entertainment stuff on it. I think I'll get a netbook...all I want is to type, and to update my blags once in a while.

I've actually found a couple that meet both requirements (like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834157821). I just wanna see if you guys can anything that offers the most for its money. I wanna find something with a pretty good CPU, like an i5 at 2.33 ghz or something (unless less is fine; I don't really know for a laptop that won't be used for gaming). Is that amount good for just normal college use and enough so that everything will load quickly and smoothly. I know that's more about the RAM, but doesn't CPU also have something to do with it?

Geh. It doesn't really matter. These low-end threads are boring. Every single laptop manufacturer there is except, mayhaps, Apple, makes laptops to fit that niche, and they are for the most part identical. Except, as Rockz says, that laptops with a numpad (which I haven't missed the slightest) I've never noted on a laptop below 16"'; I don't think most 15.5" laptops have them. Otherwise... pick a manufacturer and browse their lineup.

Can you find me a high-end $1000 laptop that can do photo and video editing simultaneously just for fun then?

I never said they don't exist, just that they are the limiting factors. Finding a 15" with a numpad is tough and limits your options on cpu/ram/oem.

It's a lot like 1080p and 13" screens.
