Terraining Tips ![]() - How to improve your terrain - We've seen a lot of tutorials around, but there really is only very few tutorials about how to terrain. So far, I've found these: #1 (2 parts), #2 (3 parts). I am here proposing to all StarCraft II mappers to give out their little tips about Doodads Placement and General Terraining and share any knowledge they have about it. I'll make sure to update this thread and when I'll consider we have gathered up enough information, I'll make a Guide with it. General terraining tips:
Bel'Shir (Jungle):
A little article that might help you out when creating waterfalls: I also wanted to make a separated section for this because it is the kind of features that could be useful, even when not prettying up your terrain: Copying terrain, doodads or units: -> Turn on 'Selection Mode' (hit 'Space') -> Highlight what you want to mirror or copy
-> Ctrl + V to Paste Mirroring your selection: -> Alt + . to flip Horizontally -> Alt + , to flip Vertically
This trick is very useful for melee mapping since it allows you to create perfect inverted terrain. Finally, I'd like to thank every member that helped me. This include SENers just like Mapsters. Talking of Mapster: a guy wrote a tutorial, partially for this thread. Here it is. Make sure you read it, it is very useful! Thanks to Mozared! Still needing help.
Precision: "tips" it implies that when I ask for "How to place Waterfall?", I actually mean "How to place Waterfall so it looks good and natural?". By the way, I just discovered the "Ignore Placement Requirements". It is -very- useful, but is there a way to set it as checked by default? It is quite annoying to have to place doodads before enabling this option on individual doodads. ;o ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

YOu should put down how to copy, paste, and flip terrain..
I haven't worked on the editor for a bit, but I wonder if it's able to rotate terrain ... Anyways, all you do is go onto Selection Mode Highlight a piece of terrain (It helps to make it snap to grid) ctrl+c to copy ctrl+v to paste.. you'll get a dotted line where you can click to paste the terrain With this, click alt+. to flip horizontal (i think it's horizontal) click alt+, to flip vertical (i think it's vertical). And voila, you have an inverted terrain, perfect for melee mapping This also works with doodads, units, and probably all the other stuffs too |

I'd also like to know if anyone had good tips for lighting? It for sure is an important part of terraining. Environment tips as stupid as "where to put fishes/birds" or "what scene/lighting fits well with a Rain effect" are welcome too! EDIT: Tips about how to place 'Minerals' patches (resources) would be really cool. I believe that, if properly placed, they can give a lot to a scene! I've been looking recently at Blizzard's own terraining in World of Warcraft, specifically their texturing. When Blizzard makes a road, they lay down a pathway of stones or bricks or whatever and then transition it into dark dirt on either side before transitioning that into grass or undergrowth.
In general, it's also good to put 'harder' textures on upper places - realistically, erosion is going to wear away at high spots, thus making rocks and harder materials show through while dirt and any grass that might try to grow there washes away.
