What ever happened to Vinzalf?

Anyone who was heavy into the UMS scene back in the early days of SC and subsequently Brood War might remember the name Vinzalf. Vinzalf was primarily known for two things:

- Creating the Emerald Patch for SCEdit that allowed mapmakers to change all unit names in SC Original (pre-Brood War).
- Creating the legendary Kyprion Pact RPG map

In those halcyon days of Starcraft's explosive UMS scene growth, Vinzalf's work stood out quite a bit. He even had a fantastic website called Vinzalf's Domain that hosted his own RPG maps along with a very nicely curated selection of others that he thought were worthwhile. Unfortunately, The Wayback Machine doesn't yield any useful archived snapshots of his awesome site from the late 90's. Here are the addresses where it once resided if anyone else wants to take a stab at uncovering some old snapshots or archived versions of the site:

Anyway, curiosity got the best of me today and I started trying to track down Vinzalf to see what the hell he's been up to since vanishing from the SC scene rather abruptly all those years ago. All that I managed to find is what appears to have been his DeviantArt account, but the last activity was in 2003. I'm sure it was him because it uses the label "Debonair Extraordinaire" and SC: Brood War as his favorite game.

If anybody has any leads on this elusive figure, let me know in this thread. It might sound odd that I'm trying to track down an SC mapmaker who's been out of the game for over a decade, but I'm just really curious at this point.

None.

I can't help you, but I wanted to say that I do remember SC Edit Emerald as it was the only modified version of the Campaign Editor that worked on Mac at the time.

I'm grateful to him for that work, or I could never have made any maps.

As someone who was still on a Mac when I first started playing SC, I cannot agree with this more. Not to mention Emerald also allowed you to open StarEdit in OS X whereas you had to use OS9 or that legacy mode to run it otherwise, if I remember correctly.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

The coolest thing I remember was the early version of kyprion pact (like prior to sc 1.04 I think) used an extra vulture with the male adjutant portrait. I was amazed to see it and never saw it again. Then I lost the map when my 17 GB HDD died and broodwar came out.

Looks like he moved to Vancouver?

Anyone who's been mapping from the beginning is going to remember Emerald. It was the only version of the editor worth using for a while, Mac or otherwise.

Although, while I'm not sure if it was fixed eventually, there was a strange oversight which left the Zerg Defiler unchanged. I remember my pre-teen self being endlessly frustrated by this issue :P

Good luck tracking him down. Best advice is to try to find another name he'd be more recently associated with.

Just remembered that I made this thread a while back.

Call me a creepy stalker if you must, but I just sent an email to that Pixel Human
company in Vancouver asking if Vinzalf worked there. If he does and is willing to chat with me, I might try to do a quick Q&A with him about the olden days and what he's been up to since. Wish me luck.
