I have been toying around with getting a form of squad combat in SCII and I think I have a pretty good implementation with this.
I made a simple demo map, starts with a bunch of marines in a region. For each marine it creates a partner marine and adds them both to the same squad.
Any order given to a unit in a squad will be directed to all other units in the squad. When you select a unit in the squad all other units will be selected (under most circumstances anyway).
Hopefully the triggers can be optimized so you could have dozens of squads at once with little lag, I am pretty tired right now so hopefully I can do more for it later. I tested with about 20 squads and it ran well on my machine.

I wonder... You could add point man functionality to it, perhaps... When you select a member of a squad, the squad is selected and the specific member you selected takes point. (Denoted by a special selection circle?)
