I really like the game SoftWarewolf; I've been playing it for a couple hours now. I like the gem idea. I think as for the items you can buy it would maybe be better if items such as the health packs stack, and if you didn't want to allow too many items, only allow stacks of like 3 and remove one of the item slots.

Overall really fun game, the only glitch I had the entire time was 1 time on Wave 2 there was I think 1 or 2 enemies left on the opposite side of the map, and I waited for them to come to me for probably 30 seconds (they were so far away that they didn't even show on the minimap) so I went to go find them since they weren't coming to me, and as soon as I started attacking them Wave 3 automatically started without letting me upgrade or anything. Again this only happened once but I figured I'de let you know.

Question: If I were to close Firefox; or even the game tab will it remember that I've played and still let me keep the gems I have, or will I have to re-acquire them all over again?

It should remember them. I actually switched browsers between play sessions, without losing anything.
Which reminds me:
I would like to ask how SC:G remembers gems. It's useful to know as I'd rather not have to re-earn them if whatever it uses to track is lost (i.e. changed IP address, cleared cookies, whatever it is).

As for glitches, I've noticed that animations often fail to start until on-screen (i.e., blood splatters, rocket explosions, death explosions popping up at an edge of the screen when moving around).
I don't recall seeing it often, if at all, outside of my first time playing the Flash version, but, that first time, I quite frequently saw units stuck facing one direction regardless of what direction they were moving or where their target was.
It's good to see that weapons other than the final are no longer entirely obsolete, though I can't think, off the top of my head, of any reason to use level 4 weapons and not upgrade to 5.

I order you to forgive yourself!

Toward the end, I just use weapon 2 and 3 because they generate less lag. Weapon 2 shots faster but weapon 3 ensnares so I just keep changing between the two. When most units are in one spot, I go back with 5 and when against easy to kill units (Drone, Defiler and Mutalisk) I take weapon 4.

Thats a success right there, its worth upgrading to weapon 5 but still its worth using some of the other weapons ;)
The plan is to have another weapon between 4 and 5, if not i will make the weapon 5 upgrade more expensive.
I am aware of most glitches, i will make a function that removes all off-screen blood effects, that should both look better and make the game run smoother.
As for the directions screwing up, thats a problem with the flash exporter and i probably wont be able to fix that. The same goes for the rare crash where you can move your legs but everything else is frozen.
I have never seen the immidate level start bug though.. that must be very rare indeed.
The gems are stored somewhere on your computer, and its not very secure yet so i want to fix it a bit before i can tell you where ;)

Oh wow, like all the new features but what did you do to the engine? It worked perfectly fine with an older version but now it lags from Level 3 onward. Like a 70% slowdown...
Is that because of flash? If yes, where to get the .exe?

Apr 27 2010, 4:20 pm SoftWarewolf Post #106

Yes, thats because of flash, i can still easily make the game as an .exe, but i like the control i have over the game atm, since it cant be played anywhere else than on the sites i choose.

I might add a download .exe option again, when its finished or if i add a way to disable the old version when a new one is out.

It runs fine on my main computer until level 8, but thats a trippel core cpu etc.. i am sorry for the incredibly high system requirements :\

Wow stop being a control freak. :P
It would probably be enough to display a "nag/advertising screen" after every 3rd or 5th game which tells the player where to get a new version. A manual update button would work too. But don't you dare make your game access the internet without the user knowing. :P (I wouldn't let it anyway)

I have a decent cpu (Athlon X2 4800) and still get heavy slowdown. What you're doing is killing the fun of your game for many just to ensure a few people with "supercomputers" have a slightly better experience as soon as you release the next version. That's not very user friendly and may cost you some fans.

Hoping for an optimized version soon... (Please have mercy with us ordinary mortals):sadwalk:

hehe.. i'll try, wish flash would work better

i removes all off-screen effects, and now the game got lurkers! muahahaha :P (haven't uploaded yet)

It won't load on either site for me.
Flash doesn't work very well on this computer, make an exe.

Alright, it was easier than expected to add protection ;)
now it checks if your playing the latest version, both on flash and .exe

Newest flash: http://www.gameyey.com/starcraftgoliath.htm (15mb, click refresh to be sure you got latest)
Newest .exe: http://sww.pogostick.net/starcraft2goliath.exe (17mb, becomes disabled when i upload new version, manual download only)

flash and exe stores data (gems) separately, but works between versions as long as i don't change it.

10 levels! enjoy!

I order you to forgive yourself!

Each time I run the .exe, it always re-downloads.

Lurkers are hard because storm doesn't seem to effect them when they are burrowed. Also, sometimes even when they are walking they can still attack.

Not being able to play this offline is a definite downside. Luckily it doesn't affect me, but think of people wanting to play this on their laptop when they are on the move. Or some families have only 1 computer with internet access so I couldn't copy it to my younger brother's computer for him to play...

Why is it so important to you that we play the latest version that you even prevent us from playing when we can't access internet for whatever reasons?
I can't think of any program or game that enforces such a harsh policy...

Apr 28 2010, 11:02 am SoftWarewolf Post #113

Its still beta, and its only played by a couple of people, so you should be able to live with being online when you play ;)

burrowed lurks doesnt take any damage from anything, i can make them take storm damage, but it would be barely noticable.
Its impossible for them to fire when they are not burrowed, probably another lurker somewhere :P

Looks like Gems are my friends, the more I get, the more I get points.

I found a cool trick with lurkers, all I need to do is make them all go to one corner and use the weapon 5 to attack from the other side of a cliff. It could be fun to add some modes for example:
  • Timer mode: There is a timer, you get full upgrades, the weapon #1 and the point is to kill as much units as possible with the time that is given (Points are the amount of kills.)
  • Handicap mode: If you kill a certain type of unit, the game ends.
  • Item mode: A mode that forces you in a way to use the items. (Not sure yet.)

Also, found a bug: When cloaked, units would still attack me.

Just played the web-based version for the first time. I liked it, though it did lag a little. I didn't make it past Wave 2 QQ It was fun, though. :)

I'd recommend having an on-screen display for what weapons you have available and which is selected. (Could be something as simple as just showing each icon, and adding an extra border over the selected weapon. Think "Halo HUD grenade readout".) A way to display the controls after the game has started would also help ("Press H for help", etc.).

I'm also interested in a version that works offline. My school uses a firewall/content filter, so I highly doubt that this game would be able to connect to any of the sites it would need to connect to. A standalone offline version would give me something to do when I've finished all my work ahead of time in my computer classes.

Might not be what you're talking about, but it seems, in my experience, that enemies that you walk through are able to detect you (which makes sense, since you're touching them).

Adding gems that change the starting level would be neat. They'd reduce the overall number of points you can get in a game, and make it a little more difficult by putting you in a harder level with starting resources, but would eliminate the potentially un-fun really slow start.

Damn Apos, i couldn't beat you ;)
What gems do you use? i had 2 Incursion and 1 Cimmerian, next time i'll get the assassin research on lvl 2..

I will make some hub indicator thing for the weapons, david :)

Ez: i did actually plan on making a gem like that, but it kinda sucks to skip a level without getting any points or minerals, i'll figure something out.

most ground units will attack you when they touch you even if you are cloaked.. like ez said, it kinda makes sense
they still won't follow you though, flying units just fly by, and lurkers won't burrow (and they unburrow)

My normal strategy is to get the "Mineral Stay there longer" and the "+ 5 additional point for each kills" as soon as I can. After that, I just try to micro so that no unit can circle me. Later when I can, I get the "Easier collection of minerals". I upgrade my Health as much as I can, my speed just enough so I can go faster than Ultralisk and other fast units (When too upgraded, it's pointless I think) and my attack as much as I can since Guardians and Lurkers are really hard to kill. The more I micro the longer I can stay alive during later levels. It seems like when I'm at certain places in the map, unit will not all come at the same time so I try to stay around those spots. When I'm against an Ultralisk for example, I will try to stay on the other side of the lakes and he will most of the time only go back and forth.

hmm, the game suddenly froze at level 9. Only the legs of the Goliath would move, as they detached themselves from the upper body of the Goliath.
Great job on minimizing the lag btw. Runs smooth most of the time for me now :)
