Mapping on Warcraft III

I've had Warcraft III for years but never really like the overall gameplay (don't really like having only 20 units and a hero and have a resource penalty for more units). I like playing some of the rpgs they are really impressive. Warcraft I think is a great starting rts game. I've tried the editor however, it is beyond me :-( . Theres soo many useful codings a player can do. Try looking at an rpg map they quite complicated. From browsing through some of the intensive work that people research and develop on map sc editing, one must think - 'Is it all worth it?'. Playing around with EUDS and Direct Damage and be a big pain. Executing those systems are very easy to handle (i heard) on Warcraft III. So why not push Warcraft III to the limit? SEN is a great bright diverse community with lots of great ideas that I can see be a great gift to offer to the War3 bnet community. I am sure we all have our reasons, I wouldn't be surprised if it's simply because of the familiarity, comfort and setting of Starcraft that we're all addicted too.

Most of us are anticipating SC2. As we all know, its gonna have a robust editing system. Instead of using glitches (so to speak) with editing on SC, players would be able to control nearly every aspect of the game including GUI functions (Just like in Warcraft III). From that, I have a few questions:

Have any of you tried/are mapping on warcraft III? If so, What are your impressions on it?? Are you affiliated with another community like SEN thats War3 based?

As for me, I am gonna continue my passion for editing on SC as well as try my best in understanding Worldedit (with Jasshelper). I dunno, I did take Java, C++ and Flash Classes, I shouldn't feel too intimidated. Btw, Happy Christmas :D

Relatively ancient and inactive

I'm fairly good at WCIII mapping, and I've created some nice systems for it. I'm not that good at JASS, though I can convert to it and edit it around to streamline triggers. Also, like in SC, I never actually released anything. Go figure. <_<. If you need help, I'm here.

The WCIII editor... is... it's not possible for me. End of story. :crybaby:

I'm hoping that my WCIII mapping experience together with my excitement for SCII will allow me to release a number of maps for SCII before I slow down and stop finishing things. Also, I may write some nice tutorials. :D

Overcoming all the limitations and obstacles in Starcraft Map Making is the reason it is fun for people like me. It is painfully obvious that Starcraft editting was never really meant to be more than a Campaign creator, as is evidenced by the shoddy UMS examples blizzard gave us and by the very name of the editor- Starcraft Campaign Editor. As a community we have taken this simple tool and created maps far beyond anything Blizzard could've anticipated. Warcraft III's World editor, on the other hand, is not a fraction as limited as the Campaign Editor, and yet I don't find it interesting in the slightest. No creative genius is necessitated.

Beyond that, I hate the way Warcraft units move and look while I love the way units interact and move in Starcraft. And of course, everyone has Starcraft, even if they don't play it- and if they don't have it laying around I can give it to them in under a minute.

I 100% agree with everything you just wrote Kaias...
Starcraft is so fun because we are doing things we know were not orginally suppose to be possable!!
I think thats why starcraft stayed as long as it did before getting sc2
