SEN's member field is enourmous. I think it would be an awesome idea to make sort of a "SEN League" like iCCup's. This way we can all game together as awesome mappers and we don't have to bother with B.net. This would assure we're all on the same server and we can all game together!

Barely anyone here plays melee, those that do are 90% of the time terrible, and a whopping total of maybe 5 members here can make decent melee maps.

Can't we do a league for UMS players? Or does it really have to be for melee?

How would you have a league for UMS players? It would have to be for a specific map. And no one map has that sort of following.

You could just do like a record for competitive UMS? I don't know I'm throwing the idea out.

The idea has been had before, but due to the vast and infinite differences of different UMS maps, competitive or otherwise, it is not doable.

What if we do it for just a place to bring everyone together and organized? Does it really have to be competitive and have records?

I was under the impression that's what SEN already is.

The member base at the website does not equal the member base at op SEN. Hardly anyone here actually plays SC. I know, it's sad.

To summarize: although unlikely, a Melee and/or UMS League could be formed... but it wouldn't last long.

I'm one of the SENners guilty of rarely playing SC. Woe is me.

It's been done before, a long time ago there was Civil War map league, and currently there is still a League the Starcraft UMS Map Civilization World (Second Season -- Map version currently 7.9.9D) with 930+ ranked members and 230 forum members. The system used involves points for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place results in addition to for various bonuses for stats like most killed, highest resources, best kill ratio, etc. and a bonus for picking the Random Civilization option. The ladder can be played on any server, games are reported by screenshooting overview, units and structures stats pages in addition to Random Civ option. Additionally you can view stats via google spreadsheet or online through the league bot in channel op mggl.

Edit: Season 1 lasted for about 10 months, and Season 2 is now in its 5th month.

But yea, for the people here I think they should check out the fastest cash melee ladder as that seems to be the skill level we have attracted at SEN as far as melee . I remember a while backwe had a melee tournament which never finished since the site went down but I was paired against one of the "good" players who turned out to be a multi command hacker (who wasn't that great, our series was at 1-1 before the site crash). Just play in leagues already established for melee, or start your own for UMS or get in one existing. I'd like to start a league for a total conversion sometime as you can do that on b.net if you set it up right. The one that comes to mind is the squad one Starcraft Team Fortress. You can check out blizzard's site for league development kit if your interested in that sort of stuff.

If you want to make a league, you don't need our permission. General StarCraft is there for you. If it gets big enough, then we can talk about official sanctioning.

I wonder if a ums multiplayer (or not multiplayer) map making contest with weekly deadlines might inspire some more people in the community to make maps, with the assumption that the maps do not have to be grand.

I would probably participate every couple weeks with a sloppy map, and once basw is completed i would submit it with the assumption that it would pretty much automatically win

We could maybe have a different person judging each week.

And maybe even newbies could do it with a chance of winning.

And each map would be required to have that title in the chat room be "Map Making Contest - staredit.net" so other people from b.net who play it might get interested.

And each map would be posted on sen so anyone could try them out.

And no map can be submitted more than once I suggest?

If a couple people post saying this is a good idea then I could start it if you like.

I like that idea but it usually takes me a week to properly sort out a map idea, much less my time to slack off and say "Oh I have time!"

Maybe if we extended the deadline it wouldn't be such a bad idea. I like it!

Just revive the monthly mapping contests that I used to run.

well how did that go when it was running? Was it popular? I think running it more often would be pretty key to its success so that people don't get bored or unmotivated..

Thanks moose, that is encouraging and I'll think about reviving that thread or just starting a new contest some time soon.

Oh I remember some quite good maps being submitted to the monthly mapping contest. I'd love to see that up again.
