How do I make better terrain?

Ok, I think this should go in the Terrain section, since it's about terraining, but it could also go in UMS Mapmaking Assitance, since it's also assissting the making of a map... gah... mods can move this if they would rather have it in UMS Mapmaking Assisstance.

Anyways, how do I terrain well? I mean stuff like what Falkoner has in his terrain compilations. How do people learn how to do stuff like that?
I can usually imitate what pros do with some success, but I can't figure out how to make GOOD extended terrain of my own.

Speaking of Falkoner's terrain compilations, are the designs for interiors copyrighted or anything? One of the screenshots of terrain I had in one of my threads was heavily based off of one of falkoner's terrains (it wasn't exactly alike, I had blended two different interiors and it was a different shape and size, along with a few minor alterations), and someone suggested that I stole it. Do I need to pay Falkoner to use the ideas in his terrain compilations?

First of all, what everyone would tell you is ''Practice is the key'', which is somewhat true, but there are still some hints I can give you:

- Always disable that damn grid when you try to create an extended piece of terrain
- In SCMD2, most of the time, if you go in the Terrain Palette under the ''Rectangular'' section a mirrored piece is 4 tiles over or under the actual one
- To find a tile in the Palette of SCMD2, you must firstly open it, and then, press ''Ctrl'' and click on the tile you are searching

Else, practice is really the key ;)

As for the compilation's question, I think that everything you find in this is open source, so no need to give credits (since we can't find any credits into these terrain maps). But if you take terrain from someone which you know the username, it's always appreciated to get credits ;)

Ok then... currently I'm trying to make an interior that looks similar to this (hang on I edit with picture), but larger.
The problem with most blends I can find is that they don't seem to do too well veritically (they all go diagonally).

The damn thing with extended things is that it is MUCH easier to do them horizontally ;) Vertical walls are somewhat hard (though I haven't tried that hard to find some) to realize.

Anyways, I'm not sure of what is your request... you want to make this (http://i26.tinypic.com/iwk5yf.jpg) in a square shape instead of a diamond one? ... or do you want to extend this piece of terrain, keeping its actual diamond shape, into a square shape?

Yah, that one. I want to make parts of it vertical. It won't be a perfect square/rectangle, but it'll have straight parts.

Just like in real life, practice makes perfect. Most blends used doodad tiles, so have a look at those while terraining.

As for interiors, my suggestion is to look at WoodenFire's interiors and copy/cut/paste a few of the parts into a brush so you can easily make your own interiors. With terrain in StarCraft, I think Blizzard intended most terrain to be diamond/isometrically shaped. It's very difficult to pull of something that looks vertical.

To find blends, I have a map FULL of all of the pieces of terrain, all in conjunction, non-conjunction, together, useful tiles, and whatnot.

What you could do is take a piece from the map that you need a tile for, Copy it , paste it on the blend map, but do not place it. Just hover the mouse around different tiles to see if they blend. This is very good for making quick blends that are suitable for you.
A blend does not matter whatsoever on the middle of the tile, just the edges. That's what terraining abuses all the time.

Gah... diamonds waste so much space...
When I say "vertical," I don't mean the blend has to go straight up, I just need it to cover up cliffs that don't go straightly diagonal... gah, I wish I had a better way to put this or a way I could show you a picture or something...

EDIT: Ok, I figured out how to do screenies. This should be easier now... ok, what I'm trying to say is, I'm doing THIS blend:

But it can only go diagonally, it seems. I need it to go vertically, like THIS:


Is it posible?

Yeah, I could have done better, but that's probably the closest you'll get to a vertical interior. I'm not sure how it will be as far as vision goes. If you can see over the pillars, there's a problem. There's an obvious block at the bottom of each pillar, but it's nothing too large. It's rather simple, but it does its job. Of course you could doodad it up later to spice it up.
