Relatively ancient and inactive

I know we have a lot of these threads, but I'm updating soon, so I posted another one. I recommend pinning this so it doesn't go off the first page.

So, three years ago I started up with this computer as a gift. Time went on, I upgraded it to 2GB RAM and gave it a better graphics card, which I later upgraded to NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT (gift). I got some BFG power supply along with the second graphics card. And, yay me, on my birthday (in ten days) I'm getting a major upgrade. Getting an AMD Phenom II Quad-Core processor, changing motherboard to this, and upgrading memory from 2GB DDR to 4GB DDR2.

So, right now I have:
AMD Athlon 64 3500++ 2.2Ghz
2GB DDR1 RAM
~180 GB HD
~500W Power Supply (I think it was 550, actually)
NVIDEA GeForce 8800 GT Graphics Card

And it'll get considerably better soon, hopefully enough to run SCII at full settings.

External stuff:
This Wireless Mouse/Keyboard Combination, with the MX Revolution mouse and a random nice keyboard. (I'm a Logitech fanboi)
HP Photosmart 2610xi Printer/Fax/Copier/Scanner
Random 22" Gateway Monitor
And I kept the speakers that came with my brothers' first computer, I believe. Can't even find them online, they're pretty tiny.

Primary computer:
~200GB harddrive space ( I don't know if it's one or two drives... )
NVidia GeForce 7900 GT
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB ( I think ) RAM
Boring keyboard ( nothing fancy, fairly minimal, but it's comfortable and works well ) , Logitech Trackman Wheel
1024x768 NEC LCD
That one case that makes Excalibur(?) want to stab people
Some ancient BOSE speakers. Speakers are probably the one hardware component I know least about, which is saying a lot, 'cause I don't know hardware at-fucking-all. My hearing is shit anyways.

Linuxbox:
2x250GB harddrive ( actually, I think my mother took these... )
2x GeForce 8600 GT
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Quad
8GB RAM
Shitty multi-language USB keyboard ( although I'm using a KVM switch, so I can use my own =) ), same model mouse
1280x1024 Hitachi LCD, which I dislike 'cause 1280x1024 is gay ( and gives me headaches because it puts off too much light... )
$250 Silverstone case. Actually, I gave that to my teacher for free; now it's sitting in some bullshit case which so far as I can tell pretty much just sucks.
Same speakers. As in, two sets of cables running out the back to each computer.

Don't ask why my 'main' computer sucks the other's ass. =P
Also, both of them were bought whole. The first was being sold off at its component price because the person who was supposed to buy it had backed out rather late. The latter was being sold at a wonderfully low price because the owner was moving in one week and for some reason couldn't take it with them, so he just wanted to toss it off immediately.

I feel like getting a new case soon. I've had it for three years now, and its only distinctive feature is that there's a large green light above the on button.

Unless I'm stupid, you're going to need to change your motherboard for the memory upgrade (which looks virtually identical to what I'm getting, not sure what brand, though). Whatchoo gettin'?

Also, what IS there to a motherboard? I got a pretty cheap one (it was a combo with my processor), and it's missing some stuff like 1394 ports (which I don't need), but is there a serious speed deficiency or something to getting a cheaper one?

Better CAS timings I would assume, not necessary the basic speed of the ram, which would simply stay at 800 mhz?
I'm curious as well.

FSB and everything it can support, ram and processor-wise mostly.

Ah. Good. Comparing mine to more expensive ones, same FSB, and mine should supports what I need it to.

@Cent
Few things.
1. Get an aftermarket cooler and crank that Phenom II up to some serious speed. I recommend the Sunbeam Corecontact Freezer and a tube of OCZ Freezer thermal compound. Together they'll run you about 50-60$ after shipping/tax. However the OC will be quite worth it.

2. Memory standards have to do with memory dividers. FSB is linked to memory speed. Faster OC requires faster memory. If your board has a lower standard the divider is by default lower and so a bit better for OC as long as the board can handle it.

Edit: I typed all that out and then realized you got a microATX motherboard. Wow, enjoy your fail man. Less stable, less OC options (if any.), you might as well grab a motherboard out of a dell.

@Deathman
HDMI is overrated. I just want a decent low latency 22-24" monitor. My HD4870 1GB is BEGGING for a challenge.

Yep.

Cent, if you want to unlock the true potential of that Phenom II, I suggest you switch to this board:

I'll look into it when I need it. I've gotten by on an Athlon; I'm not forking over ~$150 more to overclock this unless I find a game I need and my computer can't handle.
