Quote Database

I've been planning on putting up a Quote Database for my website. You know, something like Bash.org or Corbo's QDB. I'm no coder so I cant make one myself. Now, I'm looking for software that could do just that. I've already found RASH (PHP and MySQL) and Chirpy! (Perl and MySQL). I prefer Chirpy! from the two since it was basically made to improve on RASH. Problem here now is that the webhosts I'm planning to sign up on either have a) 1 MySQL database only. b) multiple MySQL databases but no CGI/Perl support. c)multiple MySQL databases, CGI/Perl support, not accepting signups from the Philippines or requires forum posting. Keep in mind, I need at least 2 MySQL databases for WordPress and the QuoteDatabase.

So... does anyone know of a flat-file Quote Database?
Features I would prolly need are:
- Submission, accept/decline and management of quotes
- Viewing of quotes by rating(maybe not), its ID, by random

Features that I wouldnt need but would still be awesome:
- Rating of quotes
- Embeddable as a dynamic image ala Corbo's QDB

If you can't find anything that would do that...

Can anyone code something like this for me? :hurr: That would be awesome and very appreciated, but I guess(and I would bet a thousand minerals on it) no one would really do that.

...or maybe I could just ask Corbo for his source, or maybe ask him to modify it a bit for a lighter version ;p ... still not probable, though. Haha.

aka idmontie

Do you really need two MQSQLs? Why not just combine them together?

Well, I'm not really sure. The MySQL database only allows 10 MB and I'm not sure how much WordPress would eat up. Maybe I'll consider sharing the two on one database.

If you want to learn PHP, it would probably be a great idea to start it here. Creating a quote database would teach you the basics.

Otherwise, I don't really know what to tell you. What you're using on http://qdb.marxel.it.cx/ seems fine. :)

ALL PRAISE YOUR SUPREME LORD CORBO

Yeah, hai.

I'd go with MySQL, you don't need 2 databases you only need 2 tables. You can have lots of tables in just one database.
Did you make the one you're currently using in your site? If so, making the image would be REALLY easy.
You just need to know how it gets the actual quote to display and store it in a variable like $text for example then you can just use that to print your text on an image using the imagecreate function.

I could just share my code if you wish, or at least the current one. I don't mind, I have shared it before. But the current code is handled in a flat file and it's just not the best thing to mess around with which is why I am working right now on a mysql version which code I do not offer since it's not done and it has tons of latova stuff on it so unless you run latova it would be useless.

fuck you all

Yeah :P

I do not even understand half of old Pie's code on the QDB. I'd be able to create my own now but I'm going MySQL anyway, allows me to make more features.

Yeah, even with a QDB already running, I'm still planning to create my own. Current one doesn't have much admin functions other than accepting/declining quotes. If I needed to remove or edit one, I have to do it manually via phpMyAdmin which means going back to cPanel and so on. A QDB coded by myself probably wouldn't replace the current one I have, but would help me learn stuff to modify it. ^^

First, OMG OMG OMG ITS CORBO *gasp* It's actually the Corbo. Replying. On my topic. And offering halp! I can now die happy, :hurr:

Yeah, I'm a big fan. Haha.

I tried to look at the PHP code before and it was hard to understand. I gave up on trying to figure out what each line does after about 5 minutes :( I'll try again after I muster courage (and read some PHP tuts/books)

That would be great. I usually learn most stuff by example.
I don't mind if it's handled in flat file; in fact, I plan to explore the world of flat-file databases first before I delve into SQL databases. I got to admit though, I used to look at the text file that contained all of the quotes in the QDB and see how it's structured.

Thanks for the halp.
