Relatively ancient and inactive

Here, I'm asking a rather basic question: how do you interact with other players inside a game?

Me, I'm somewhat of a carebear. My favorite genre is diplomacy games (from Civilization on SC to Greece in WCIII, and I even attribute my love of Phantom to this genre preference, as it's the one really diplo SC melee map, despite the differences between it and traditional diplomacy maps). I like making alliances, or, if it's unnecessary to defend myself, sitting and building up, waiting until I get attacked so I have a reason and an excuse to defeat them without my conscience asking me how I'd feel if I were killed for no reason. If the game lasts too long with no one attacking me, I'll attack everyone at once out of sheer boredom, but other than that, I'm pretty tame and carebarish. While playing yesterday, I was attacked by two people, almost killed their capitals but let them live when they asked for it (and at the end of the game, one of these two people I spared backstabbed me while I was fighting with ANOTHER person who I'd defended from these same two people).

Anyway, that game somewhat contributed to me making this topic. On WCIII, at least, it seems most of the players are very aggressive - they attack for no reason, do whatever they can to win, etc, and I was interested in how SENners usually play. Using my uneducated, biased guess at the psychology behind this difference, I guessed that I'm secure and have no need to prove myself while others lack something in real life that makes them want to prove themselves in-game, but I'd also come up with a countertheory that I'm trying too hard to get people to like me in game because no one likes me outside of it (which isn't true, of course), and those who attack indiscriminately are secure in people liking them, so, yeah. My attempt at a psychological dissection failed.

Well, post away. This is really mostly for diplomacy games, but it really works for any types of games when you can spare people or help them.

Hehe, I'm one who always attacks people. I enjoy messing (at least trying to) other people's minds. It's just too much fun :P

I can usually know who the phantom is once I have a group of 12 or so men. Once I have those men I can harass people, maybe even attack someone, destroy a couple expoes, who knows. I can use information gained by analyzing how everyone reacts. Usually, the person who is the phantom will make the simple mistake of accusing me of being the phantom, and use my aggressive tactics as justification for wiping me out. Whoever is the phantom, unless they are intelligent, reacts to certain things differently than others.

It isn't exactly diplo, but I love the game FF7 Murder Mystery. When I can get a FH in that game, it's extremely fun. In this game, there are 1-2 who are murders and own a dark templar. Everyone else, including the murders, has a civilian with three lives. The murders try to eliminate as many civilians as they can, however, the civilians still alive can vote to see who is the murder. If they vote correctly, they have a chance to kill the murder with marines. The entire art of deception is just too fun in this map ^^

I play just to have fun, and rarely to win. 'Specially on Modern Warfare 2.

>be faceless void >mfw I have no face

I basically make alliances behind people's backs, then pwn the rest, then kill my team mate. Mind you, that's mostly in mass games, which I play rarely. I only wish you could change teams in TS/HS. Imagine, TS FFA!

Red classic.

I seek to understand what is happening then move on from there. (usually in somewhat of a turtle move)

I tend to be sneaky, or stay outside of the conflict. I'm either far away or right inside of it.

I first person shooters, i tend to either snipe, or run right in suicide-like and take as many of the enemy along as i can. This is probably why i'm so bad at melee sc. I'll play terran and do a siege tank drop and take out most of their workers, only to later run right in their front door to try and finish them off asap, and usually wind up losing because of this.

Whenever i play phantom maps, i always get kicked first, because i either A) rush someone with units, making them accuse me of being the phantom and me being kicked, or B) by sneaking into a random person's base and destroying it all later in the game, making them kick me just because they hate me for it.

I play when I'm in a pretty silly mood, and then it's just a matter of doing whatever I can to annoy people that I find annoying. If they're against me, then I'm ultra-aggressive. If they're on my team, I play shitty on purpose just to make them flip out. Whatever's good for a laugh.

You sound like a jerk Doodan. We should play sometime. We can play Phantom with Cent, because that's all he does apparently.

I can be sportsmanlike during online games (especially with fellow SENers), but I don't play online much these days and it's usually that sort of mischievous behavior that motivates me to log into Bnet or WoW.

I would never react in such a way. I'd just be like, "wtf?", and then consider the possibility that you're just doing what you described.
That, or assume you're just trying to get something to happen in general, good or bad.

ShredderIV and Centreri describe the way I tend to play games fairly well.

wth is starcraft

I'm pretty bipolar when I play games with other people. Let's look at Wow, because that's really the only game I play that is multiplayer. Usually, I'm a healer. If you do as you're supposed to, I'm your best friend. But if you screw up or piss me off, I may "accidentally" forget to heal you. I'm not the only healer to do that, either. Also, when I'm questing, I'm usually pretty nice about lootable objects. Like, if someone gets to a chest/herb before me, but agros something, I'll leave the chest/herb for them. But if people jack stuff when I accidentally aggro, I pretty much blacklist them.

Oh, and I'm pretty cynical in gchat. I like to carry on a good conversation, but I can be mean to noob players - who refuse to get help or are too dumb to be helped. There was this guy last night going "omgomg blizz sux omgomg" and wouldn't shut the hell up, so I convinced him to shut off the game for a few hours. Apparently he either left the guild or was kicked earlier today. :P good riddance. Really, if you don't like the game, uninstall it. I don't want to listen to whiney emo 11 year olds bitch about it.

edit: lol two dumb. Ironic.

The sword and the faith

Ask the people I slaughter at mod night:
I am not to be counted out until every last structure I have is gone. I do not like being harassed and I don't use harassment. I win. In overwhelming numbers and power, or any means I deem fit. I do not lose.

I think I lost one out of every twelve mod night matches, and that's only when they'd secret alliance on me because they couldn't fight me fair and win.

I am the anti-punkbitch. I don't really tolerate griefers, cheaters, obnoxious people, etc. and I generally just want everyone to have a good time. I like lively in-game chat, just not raging/QQing. In team games, I always do my best to cover my teammates (which is a good job for me, since I usually take a sniper role).

I can vouch for ex that this is true, though it isn't as badass as he makes it sound. I rush him at random, because only me and dazed make tier 1 units in mod night, beat him to within an inch of his life, he screams and pleads to be left alive. I relent and leave him with 1 building and a few miners. An hour later my entire base is swamp with final-tier untis from ex, mercilessly committing genocide, not leaving a single unit of mine alive... not even the neutral ones after I die...
Me: "Come on! I let you live!"
Ex: "Do you know fear clans? Let me teach you"

As for me, I have 2 styles, it depends. In an FFA, I will attack anyone and everyone, I don't care if you're attacking the guy who's giving me the most trouble (This is why I lose at 47).

I love to troll/grief above all else.

Rush. Run in there with hip shot (with a Ak-47 if it's a FPS) and yell out "I'm Osaaamaaaaaa"

I always rush. Always.... It's cause i suck at doing things long term. You don't need skill to suicide.
