I love Google, but I'm not too confident it's going to make too big of a splash in the OS market. Personally, I don't like the idea of a web-centric operating system. The idea seems crippling, although for the basic tasks that Google intends to provide services for (Google Docs, Calandar, Email, etc.) I suppose it'll be fine. But there lies the problem, the operating system is going to be another one of those Linux distros that are geared toward doing simple things, and until it becomes a suitable desktop operating system as opposed to an operating system geared towards the netbook market, it's not going to be taking any significant marketshare.

What are your thoughts? And on a secondary note, GMail and a handful of other Google web apps are officially out of beta. Hooray ! ;)

In the GUI, perhaps, but not under the hood(Terminal), at least when it comes to Linux.

I think that this Google OS is going to be exactly the kind of OS that most people actually need, one that can do basic office functions, lots of computer power is wasted for people who have an OS that is much more capable than their needs.

But there are already a handful of Linux distros that offer a simple, user friendly GUI and are geared toward netbook use. I can't imagine the idea of being web centric drawing people towards Linux, since the handful of linux distros that are packaged with retail netbooks haven't been too successful.

I think the main draw of it is the Google support, since Google has the power behind their servers to also help out.

But Google's is going to be /better/.

I rpedict within 2 years of this out, it will be on all netbooks by default, and Microsoft will be clamoring with a version of Windows solely for netbooks.

I do stuff and thingies... Try widening and reducing the number of small nooks and crannies to correct the problem.

Google will take over earth someday :P

But I sense that they will have some problems at launch because they have no experience in creating an OS. But a few months after release that OS will rock. I'm sure...

I'd want a Google OS for laptop and webbooks, but a PC needs windows, just the way it has to be.

I forsee an above expectation OS.

Google for president :)

This is going to make a dent in the OS market. Google developers already use the google OS as their main setup because it's the best[source needed]. Anything google makes will succeed, even if it takes them a couple tries, mark my words.

Umm, what? Where did you hear anything like that? I appreciate the enthusiasm and support you have for Google but you shouldn't be spreading junk like that.

Hear what? That google devs use chrome os?

EDIT:
Hmm, i cant find the source, but I seem to remember reading it on engadget somewhere. I'll note that in my previous post.

That the Google developers use "Google OS" on their "main setup". Google's operating system is still a work in progress and the most info we have on its development is a couple sets of alleged photos which are likely fake anyway.

Page has done multiple interviews on the matter, so, we do have more than faked photos. Your post is incorrect.

That doesn't say anything about the developers and it doesn't really prove anything besides that Google has a concept. We don't know how far they've gotten along with the operating system and if it's level of functionality at the moment. I don't know what you were trying to support with that site there... Nobody's arguing the fact that Google has an operating system in the works...

You said the only info on the OS were faked pictures. This is more info.

About the concept, there is. We don't actually have any solid info on the OS and what stage it's on, etc.
