Video cards

I was thinking the first one: (EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit GDDR3) but maybe the fourth one: XFX PVT98GYDLU GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3? Is the extra $50ish worth it?

Things to take into consideration:
Not really that much of a gamer, but occasionally do dabble.
Not trying to spend shit loads of money.
My current card (msi 8400 gs 64bit 256mb gddr2) sucks. Well it's better than I expected performance-wise for how much I paid for it, but it slightly skews the display and can't dual monitor with a dsub and svideo connections because the card was wired wrong.
WinXP
2 gigs of ram, will be 4 eventually
3 ghz dual core processor
this mobo - doesn't have pci express 2.0 but I read they are interchangeable, just won't be 2.0 speed, right?

Edit: A little better than the first card, at ~same price? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150341

That was actually a recent development. I was looking at the cards for the last two days and that just popped up this morning.
But seriously, I don't care about the game. I could sell it though?

The sword and the faith

I would not recommend getting a 9000 series card at this point and time because they currently are not a good price:performance choice.

1. Tell me how much you're looking to spend.
2. Please note that MOST cards do not need PCI-E 2.0 because they simply do not make use of all of the 1.0 bandwidth to begin with.
3. Please tell me you aren't going to be stuck on Nvidia when I can probably find you a much better ATI card for what you're spending.

Just assuming from your current card choices you're in the neighborhood of 150$.

Sub 150$: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150351
Better than any card you have up there.

For 155$: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121288R
Much better than any card you have up there. (Note: Open box so it will be just the card. Also OB products go in and out of stock a lot so if you'd like a cheap 4870 just look around newegg they usually have nice deals on them open box. :) )

I don't take risks with open box stuff. I don't want to deal with the hassle of shipping it back.
I do love Nvidia, I've had Radeon before. Hmmmm... maybe.

The XFX HD4850 1GB, like all XFX cards has a lifetime warranty if you register it with them within 30 days of purchase.

On the OB note, my ASUS Dark Knight HD4870 1GB is open box, got it a few months ago for 172$ which was a steal, and its been running with no problems. But whatever, your call.

.....Is still not better than the ATI cards I suggested.

Quote from Anandtech
If we focus on what is likely to be the target resolution of 1680x1050, the Radeon HD 4850 ties its direct competition, the GTS 250 512MB, the Radeon HD 4850 leads more often than it trails or loses. The 1GB GTS 250 does edge out the 4850 in one more benchmark, but it does cost $20 more and we haven't tested the 1GB 4850 which might make the difference.

We've recommended the 4850 over the 9800 GTX+ in the past, and we'll continue to do so now that it's called the GTS 250. But the extra memory does help out, especially if the card is to be used for 1920x1200 on a budget (or maybe with an HDTV).
Please note my recommendation was an HD4850 1GB while yours was a GTS250 512mb. Also note in some benchmarks the 4850 competes with the GTX 260, which you cannot dispute a GTS250 is not on par with.

The prices are relatively equal, and with a lifetime warranty on both of them for being XFX, it really wouldn't hurt to get the better card. It's worth the extra 5$.

As far as open box:
Quote
Open Box

This is our Detailed Open Box Item Return Policy. Newegg often sells items that are listed as "open-box." Because these items are sold at greatly reduced prices, they are subject to this limited 30 day non-replaceable returns policy. Such items can only be returned within 30 days of the applicable invoice date. “Return” constitutes receipt of the product by Newegg, and not the mere issuance of an RMA. Newegg cannot provide replacement service for these items, as their stock is limited. The entire risk as to the quality and performance of these items is with the buyer. These items have been tested for functionality, but may have superficial physical defects including, but not limited to, scratches, dings or dents. Should these items exhibit a functional defect following their purchase, the buyer (not the manufacturer, distributor, or Newegg) assumes the entire cost of all necessary servicing or repairs, unless otherwise required by law. These items are not covered by any 30-day satisfaction guarantee.

If you purchase an Open-Box product you will receive an OEM or BAREBONE item, meaning you will only receive the item itself. Accessories are NOT INCLUDED with Open-Box products, even if the missing accessory is required for the item to function properly.
?????
I thought they could simply be returned.

You'd be better off with the XFX 4850 1GB anyway, so I wouldn't worry about it.

That article was definitely a nice read, thanks, but it only gave me more questions ;o
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130469 - intrigued about the less power it uses (and less heat it would make, I would assume)... about on par with the 4850?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143140 - gtx 260?

GTX260 is overkill, 4850 1GB > GTS 250 1GB.

Don't you think that games are better supported by nvidia overall though? I think I'm leaning towards the 4850 though ;o

I agree that games are better supported by nvidia but i think you should google performance comparisons between the 4850 and nvidia cards. (because sometimes they offer specific game performances)

Anyone who thinks that a nvidia card is better in any way just because nvidia has their name on it is a fanboy.

I'll either be picking the GTX 285 or Radeon 4890 when I build a new system in the coming weeks. Really, the 9800 GTX will serve you fine. If you're not that much of a gamer, I wouldn't spend more than $150 on a card. Personally, I'd go with the 9800 GTX+ from eVGA for you. With the $10 MIB, it comes out to $120. The 9800 GT is a little less, around $100. Above that, the 4870 seems like a solid choice around $150. After that, you're in more expensive territory where the price/performance ratio takes a bit of a beating. Basically, any 9800 GT / Radeon 4850 or better is going to suit you just fine for what you want out of it. I've had my 8800 GTX since winter '06, and I honestly haven't really felt the need to upgrade it. Sure, I might have to turn anti-aliasing down to 4x in some newer games, but it still handles pretty much everything i throw at it (Crysis runs smooth enough at medium-high). Of course, it cost $650 back then, so of course it should have some longevity. Even my quickly aging GeForce 6800 that is 5-6 years old is capable of playing most new games. Over perhaps eight or nine years of PC gaming (and the associated knowledge of PC parts that comes with that), I've found that the cpu/Ram amount ages more quickly than the graphics card. That GeForce 6800 can handle most modern games (albeit poorly), but the Pentium 4 3.0 GHz and 1 Gb of Ram struggle in their own respective areas.
