MERCANTILISM

Overview

Most mods these days put most emphasis on your standing military and initial base. Concepts such as Corban turtling have risen to defend your lone base or expo and lead to long games of trench warfare or Doodlean anti-turtling. Mercantilism focuses on the opposite: you MUST expand and focus on your economy in order to win the game.

In order to win while playing Mercantilism, you must expand to new expansions and protect your economy at all costs. Your life force (gas), is draining at a steady rate and must be replenished. If the counter hits zero, you will be defeated. Deciding to camp your lone base to hold until the ends of time will only allow you to endure the pain of a slow and inevitable death.

Gameplay

At the initial start, you will quickly have to establish a Refinery and task workers to prevent loss at the beginning (going into a game afk will kill you). You must quickly expand into additional gas reserves, as a depleted geyser will be unable to maintain your economy. Using units such as Fanatics and quick, lightweight infantry, you will have to cause your opponent to be unable to extract gas or destroy all of his buildings.

Unit Profiles

Fanatic (Tier 2): The fanatic is your most ideal and deadly infantry unit. Employing rapid machine gun fire at a distance and willing to sacrifice himself for the preservation of the State, he will strike fear deep into your opponent's heart. The fanatic is equipped with C4 charges that will detonate if an intruder gets too near.

Fun Facts
  • Only One Race
  • Focus On Sabotage, Not Large Armies
  • No Corban Turtling

This mod may or may not be submitted in the WMC, depending on if I get it done in time. :P

There will be units with the sole intention of harassing your enemy's economy, such as slowing the workers with a spell or sending in explosive fanatics to destroy your opponent's mines.

I don't see how this is mercantilist.

There isn't a single reason for picking a name, and that's why I asked the question in the first place. If his reason is because the mod actually relates to mercantilism, then I'm asking how it specifically does.

Unless you know the reason why Horde chose the name you have no business posting, because all you're doing is flaming.

You must post additional details!

We require more specifics.

Insufficient information.

Seriously, so far the only thing you've said is that 0 gas = dead. And Devilisk is right, plz to explain the name? Mercantilism is an economic philosophy where you try to export more than you import, which is not at all related to this mod.

Oh btw, I do like your idea about the gas, but I'm annoyed at the lack of other information.

Some Gameplay and a Unit Profile has been added.

I apologize for the lack of information, but I assure you there will be a superfluous amount within a few days, just give me some time to add more stuff and write up more. :P

Sweet! An interesting idea, I look forward to seeing what you do with it.

I wish you luck!

Dungeon Master

Did I show you my gameplay model that revolved around expanding as much as possible? Might be similar to this.

We live in a society.

Actually, I think melee on non-money maps where nobody ended the game with a rush was the first to have this concept. :P

People can get picky over the silliest things. For the title, how's this for an explanation:

Your gas is constantly draining because you're exporting it! If you reach 0, you must file bankruptcy and thus must close down shop, only to learn about a government bailout a week later.

Dec 25 2008, 10:56 pm FlyingHat Post #14

That explanation is down to the ground brilliant.

Dec 25 2008, 11:06 pm ForTheSwarm Post #15

So that means a week after we lose we can get 700,000,000,000 gas? Hooray! And if we're exporting gas then wouldn't that mean we would get money for it? So after losing gas we get minerals?

We can manually select a target for the fanatic to C-4, right?

It's not being picky it's being curious. I'm was asking a question not providing a criticism and picking at his choice of title. I simply do not know what Horde's reason for picking the title is and I am simply asking for his explanation.

Also your explanation isn't even mercantilist. It's like some confused reference to our capitalist economy. According to the theory of mercantilism a nation wants as much bullion (silver and gold) as possible. Now if we assume that the gas represents that bullion, why would the nation be exporting that? Mercantilists want to export, but they don't export their bullion. If we assume that the gas is some kind of finished product that a mercantilist nation would want to export, then how is the bullion measured, because it should be the bullion that shows how wealthy each nation is.

Horde has stated that the gas is "life force" but its still unclear what that means and how that ties into mercantilism, which is why I am merely asking for some explanation on his choice of title.

Since I never actually began the work for this mod at all, I'll be using it for the SMC.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED:

Question: Is it actually Mercantilist?

Answer: Not really, it's just a cool name for an economic based mod.
