So I recently installed Windows XP Pro after giving up on trying to clean a fasec invested drive, and only very recently reinstalled Starcraft. For some reason now I cannot connect with anyone on battle.net(errors out) regardless of bars displayed and no one can join the games I host(lat message)... Nothing has changed in my network setup, and it doesn't seem to matter if I'm behind a router or directly connected to the modem. Any ideas?

UPDATE
Ran tcpoptimizer, for some reason many of the values were empty, fixed that. Also updated the NIC driver, I'm now able to join almost all the games but no one can connect to me still. Just to clarify, before formatting and installing XP Pro I could host/join fine.

Things To Know:
  • Can't host at all
  • Can join the majority of games
  • Tried Port Forwarding
  • Tried Firewall Exceptions
  • Tried Disabling AntiVirus/Firewall
  • Tried Direct Modem Connection
  • Reinstalled Starcraft/Broodwar
  • Updated network/router/modem firmware
  • Windows Firewall is not installed
  • Using PeerGuardian/ZoneAlarm/Avast!

Current Angle:
Missing UDP Protocol

Hello

Ports open?
maybe something like a mega-firewall?
Actually, I'm not a pro about computers, but you should at least look if ports are opend

Please report errors in the Staredit.Network forum.

No firewall installed/enabled on this comp yet. As for the router, all the ports are forwarded correctly when I'm connected to it.

Did you turn off windows firewall and the security service? I say this because it's automatic and doesn't need to be enabled ;o

So are all other internet functions working properly?

Yea, windows firewall and the security services are disabled. As far as I can tell everything is working fine except for my starcraft connectivity.

Was messing with my connection today in an attempt to let me host games. Updated my network driver, updated my modem, same for router. While doing so I noticed that I'm missing the UDP protocol, and I can't find any information on how I go about adding it. (Was there before I formatted...) Is my lack of UDP the reason I can't host any games on bnet? If so, anyone know how I can install it?

A little information about UDP to answer your question

I did some reading and it maybe sounds like the UDP protocol was uninstalled somehow.. Maybe if you try to install a TCP/IP protocol again it might work out for you?

I tried adding it back but the only protocols listing for install were Network Monitor Driver, NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol, and Microsoft TCP/IP version 6. I installed ipv6, and tried reinstalling TCP/IPv4 but the uninstall button was greyed out. I've also noticed QoS Packet Scheduler is missing from the list, but from what I've read it isn't needed.

Maybe there is a piece of software that includes the protocol? All of my google results relating to installation/drivers of UDP are about adding support for it to software and enabling it in linux.

Maybe you set wrong port information. This usually happens because the data flow from battle.net is not being transfered through your router. Try adjusting your port settings and it should fix the problem because the same thing happened to me awhile back. It was tricky to figure out but i was playing with my router settings and managed to make it work

I'm currently connected directly to the modem. Also, when I'm connected to the router 4000,6112-6119 udp/tcp are forwarded to my address. I also tried changing the default port starcraft uses to connect to battle.net, to no avail.

Port forward and turn off firewall.

I've tried both, together and separately.

Maybe its about time you get another router? Maybe that one crapped out or something?

While I agree I need a new router, I still can't host even when connected directly to the modem.

EDIT: Apparently my computer has no trouble sending/receiving UDP traffic, as I noticed that when PeerGuardian is enabled it will block UDP originating from my computer and others occasionally. Though the software sending it may use its own implementation of UDP.

Thigh high affectionado

This is gonna sound stupid, but my router refuses UDP ports to open UNLESS the same TCP port is open at the same time

Open 6112 for TCP then UDP, and try :D

formatting and installing XP Pro
... and updated xp, right? :) (and then, after that, turn off windows firewall again because it usually restarts itself)

At TassadarZeratul's suggestion, I attempted to connect to SFR. I was greeted with the following error, which does not show up when I connect to one of the default gateways. Guess starcraft doesn't use its own implementation of UDP.

It appears my lack of the UDP protocol is the source of my problems, though I find it strange I can still join games. So... anyone know how I can install the UDP protocol on windows? Google returns nothing useful.
