your idea is very creative and i will admit i have NEVER thought about it before...

but it has another drawback other than the one u said:

If you use the air weapon as the spell, what is gonna be displayed in the unit's stats box during game play...? Think about it...

Yeah, the spell stats will be displayed in the unit's stat box. Doesnt really matter though. Just make a TBL entry for it with the spell's name. Thats what I did in SCNA.

with your help, modmaster, I came up with the ideas of preserving current spells...

just use the useweapon command when casting spell... lol..

Useweapon doesnt like projectiles. So it will only work if you intend your spell to appear directly on the target. I used the air attack method because I wanted my spell to shoot out and burn enemies in a line (SCNA Protoss Vindicator).

Ultraviolet -- I can't upload my EUD maps, I think the DLDB has some issue with handling them. Are you trying to upload EUD maps?
