Write.

Write essays, write stories, write poetry, write whatever pleases you. There are many sites out there that let amateur artists share their work, and these are a good place to try to practice your skills.

Write a shorty story and post it here, of course we'll criticize it, but it will mostly be constructive. Just don't get all butt-hurt.

They say do what you know best.

If you do not know how to write, I would not suggest you becoming a writer.
It is blurt advise, I know, but if you are set on becoming a writer you should join a creative writing club.

Well, one is:
WRITE AND WRITE AND WRITE AND WRITE AND WRITE AND WRITE AND WRITE AND WRITE and while you're writing make sure you get a job at TACO BELL TACO BELL TACO BELL or maybe if you want to be a little more literary inclined stock the shelves at BORDERS BORDERS BORDERS.

A college degree, a steady, if mild income from an easy job, and an absolute passion (skill helps, but Ayn Rand gets her books published, so it's a pretty level field) for writing, and just WRITE AND WRITE AND WRITE and try to get your stories printed in literary magazines (this is after you work your way up from the small stuff like internet and peer criticism).

Devotion and hard work. Now, I'm no expert on this, but if one of the core principles of the job has the word "Devo" in it, I assume it's a good career.

I wasn't butthurt at all. I knew that was what it was, since I was heavily influenced by it at the time, and I really didn't mind your criticism at all.

On topic:
As DTBK said, just write. My problem is I can't really keep a story going.

Just here for the pie

Just write about anything. Write about your life experiences, fantasy, poetry, anything really. Think of a random topic and write a 3-page short story, or just have little practice writing sessions.

Writing as in stories / novels or writing as in poetry, lyrical or I suppose you could even do non-fictional writing if that's what pleases you.
Though I imagine most people that want a career in writing will probably pursue Books, Novels and Reports.
Poetry and Lyrics are generally more inspirational writings, ones that help the writter express themselves, but not necessarily a good way of making money, though if you manage to pump out unique poetry that kids would read, or that people into romance poetry and the likings, then go ahead and pump out a poetry book, but I advise you stick to stories D:

I'm no writer, but I have to say like the others, just write and write. Let others critique your work but not to the point that you would probably quit writing.

What others think of your work means little compared to what you think of yours.
Write what you please, and there will always be at least a small crowd that appreciates it.

Will everyone cut it out with the repeating what everyone else said already? You're not helping.

Everyone telling to write a lot will not help you write a lot, first of all. It's more along the lines of what Wilhelm was saying. If you have a passion for writing, then just run with it. There's probably no forcing it.

As an aspiring writer myself, I've written well upwards of a 100 pages of stuff that had no relation to school requirement. I like to open up word sometimes and just start typing whatever comes into my head. Sometimes it'll be a story, or it could be a poem (possibly that makes no sense, but at least creative), sometimes it'll end up being a novel. I also like to write down any quotes that pop into my head that I think might be cool -- and I save everything. Don't be afraid to be different. Everyone would much prefer if you are, truthfully. It would probably be a good idea to post some of the things you've written online and get feedback, or show it to your friends in RL and get feedback from them. There isn't really any concrete advice to be given on the matter, as you can see, but if you love writing then don't let go of it. Writing is a GREAT thing with all kinds of potential...

P.S. Take heed of what Viet said please.

Not the attitude to take if you want to get any income at all as a writer. Though it does get a round of applause in immaterialistic circles.

I'd read more and analyze the styles of popular authors. Everything you write needs to be you, but what is you but the compilation of everything you read? (and some gook and gore and stuff)

Just remember to be detailed but not too long-winded. Try to keep it short and to the point. And detailed. Which is a bit contradictory, so you have to strike a balance there. Post some short stories here and we'll criticize 'em. Though, if it's regular realistic fiction, I'll probably fall asleep reading it. Fantasy and Sci-fi! :dontgetit:

I think it's more the idea that writing is a personal thing and that you should write for yourself first and foremost. Unless you want to be a (heartless) journalist. :b

As I said, writing for yourself isn't any source of income. Writing for yourself is nice, but no one should need any instructions on how to do that. Starting a career in writing is completely different. If you want to be successful, you should swallow your disgust at what you're writing (mild sarcasm) and write it anyway if the people want it. Come on, poor writer-for-self or rich writer-for-others?

I kind of want to be a writer and designer for games, so... <.<

Well, designing stories for games doesn't take much effort. Of course it has to be original, and will be hard at first, but once you have a solid story, sequals are boring.

Look at the Halo franchise. :><:

A story for a game should take just as much effort as a novel. Also, designer, as in gameplay.

Oh_Man -- whereas just "press X to get 50 health back" is pretty mindless

Oh_Man -- because it adds anotherr level of player decision-making where u dont wanna walk too far away from the medic or u lose healing value

Oh_Man -- initially I thought it was weird why is he still using the basic pre-EUD medic healing system, but it's actually genius

Vrael shouted: I almost had a heart attack just thinking about calculating all the offsets it would take to do that kind of stuff
With the modern EUD editors, I don't think they're calculating nearly as many offsets as you might imagine. Still some fancy ass work that I'm sure took a ton of effort
[2024-5-06. : 12:51 am]
Oh_Man -- definitely EUD
