i'm trying to test the triggers of a map, but it's kinda hard to do that without firing it up... and i can't do that. i've tried removing some triggers to see if they were the source of the problem, but now i can't...
now i used proedit 1.4.1 to protect the map, but i saved it as another name... i did compress it before i protected it... does this effect the original map in any way. i can't imagine that it would render it unplayable...

PROEdit will not change the original map if you don't overwrite it. The problem should be something else.

Compressing it before protecting it may have been the problem, protection usually compresses at the same time, try just protecting it.

make sure you have computer players in a seperate force and you have human slots in another
don't forget start locations too

Isn't this what happens when you have color characters in the force name?
