I'm not sure where this topic would fit in the current SEN set-up, but here's my spiel:

Most RPG projects are huge endeavors, that are technically possible, but are often just beyond the scope of a single mapper. Part of what people forget is that most real RPGs are developed by large teams of designers, storyboarders/writers, programmers, etc.

However, we have a couple of advantages, like a prebuilt engine and premade graphics, but we often force extra difficulties on our-selves (extended terrain and triggers). Most single-person project fail because a single mapper will often lose motivation and most group projects fail because of a lack of communication and group disputes.

So, here's my idea: Several mappers will work together and independently on a series of maps that work together.

What this means is that a group will have an ultimate goal/storyline, but each mapper (or pair?) will focus on a small map that will be seperate from the other maps (think about double the length of the unfinished Deep Blue map, maybe longer). In this way, each project will be short and simple and allow creativity and flexibility for each mapper.

Mappers are kind of like turtles anyways: Slow, independent, and grass-eating. (Also usually extremely horny).

An important part of this process is that it won't just be on your own, there will be plenty of input from other mappers if they need it.

I haven't really thought this all the way through, but I wanna know if anyone is interested.

Basically like a series of RPGs right? Will it be like Final Fantasy where the game play is same but the story is different or one that connects? I've been wanting to make a RPG for a long time so I'm interested in joining.

It's negotiable, I was thinking it would all basically be the same RPG but different parts would be presented differently by the different makers, eg. Use different cinematic styles and battle systems.

It could be really interesting, and I really want to emphasize short, finished, well-made RPG maps.

It could also be made out of parellel or related stories.

You would do terraining for me right? ;)

I think I'd help with terraining of all the maps, to give a consistent and awesome backdrop to the maps.

=P

I always lose motivation. lol... i had a series (of faliures) called -=Neona Earth=-

basically they were three different maps that were in a 3-part storyline.

I.The first map was level 1-20 [jungle]
III.Then 21-40 [ice world]
II.then... you guessed it 41-60. [ash world]

it had a save load system.... but thats about the only thing in the map that complimented it. terrain sucked (im not good at it) the name colors were inconsistent, no spells, crappy storyline, not enough bad guys walking around... yadda yadda yadda..

Basically you wandered the earth for the first two maps then you journeyed to a mountain in the 2nd one... then you enter it to win/leave the game. the third map you played in the center of the earth (after you have gone inside of the mountain) and you fought the evil soul inside of the earth.

Im starting over if anyone wants to hop in on my new map.... PM me if your interested (i emphasize PM)

hmm sounds really interesting would the story be interlinking and who comes up with said stories/characters/abilities? also if someone gets a character to set power level in 1game would it be expected to start more powerful in the next?

One person would have to do the engine (spells, skills, etc.). Then that could be copied to the other maps for use.

Anyway, this could maybe work.

Actually, impeached, I think it's totally possible to have different engines for the different maps, that might be similar like, say a sequel's engine and an original game's engine.

I just want to know if this is an interesting idea and who has the time and would like to participate.

Church, I would say yes. The only thing is the engine might be very different, making the skill curve for the game very interesting (Probably be more a skill roller-coaster if you charted it). So, you're more powerful and retain basic skills from the other map, but have to learn a new angle of battling/etc.

If you're going to join I would like to stress that you shouldn't have other commitments that are going to constantly tear you away. The times we will be working and what will be in this maps is totally up in the air and flexible, like flying rubber bands.

LuL. I actually had an RPG at 60% completion a whileback, it was just lacking triggers in areas... It died, along with my fried harddrive. Goodbye Legacies RPG, RIP 2004. (lol, someone used that name!)

I'm bored and meh, Im in.

It's a good idea, Wilhelm. One thing I'd like to add is that the mapscan be not only RPG-style - you can have arenas, logical games (of course, supported by the storyline), defenses and other game types. Unfortunately, I don't have the time and motivation do do any mapping (and it will probably stay like this until I leave to university).

Nice idea, but as I already have 3 mapping projects I plan on finishing before next summer, I'm a bit busy, but feel free to contact me via MSN or any other way you want if you need help, with just about anything mapping related.

In my experience, every single request for help in a group project has always been equivalent to "do all the work for me plz!"

I've made 3-4 maps cooperatively, all with the same person. Since then I haven't found anyone else who is worth anything (cooperatively).

Really? That's really hard to do, as communication is always an issue. I think this is a really cool way to map, but I don't think I have time to spare from my current project.

Dungeon Master

Hi Wilhelm.

I want to say I'd like to be a part of this. But I doubt I'd have the motivation. Maybe if you sent me some details as to what the map/storyline would be like, I could think about it a little better.

I think it was more of an announcement rather than a job offering. I doubt he has a storyline yet.

Esponeo, I listed already that is what I'm trying to work AGAINST. Your post is really unneeded, we've all been around long enough to know that (it's like "Did you know Siege tanks can turn into Sieged Tanks?!!!). In fact, I never once said "I'm making a map, HELP ME!!!!!", I just have an idea I thought would be interesting to share.

The idea of having people work INDEPENDENTLY on maps would hopefully weed out people who aren't going to do anything, and would allow the project to be finished if someone drops out.

Anyways, this was just a test to see if anyone is interested. This is not a finalized idea in any way, and I'm not sure if I'm going to go through with this.
So far, I have:
Vi3t-X
ws-Impeached
Echo
Killer_Kow

As potentially interested in this and having some time to commit. If anybody has a problem with being on\wants to join, I need to know soon, (I know this is an odd time, but it's when I've been up lately). I might be going away over the weekend to West Virginia, but I will be back next week.

I had this storyline series a long time ago which I was making a map for but I lost it. Maybe we can revolves around that or change it around or make up our own.

Oh_Man -- whereas just "press X to get 50 health back" is pretty mindless
[05:02 am]
Oh_Man -- because it adds anotherr level of player decision-making where u dont wanna walk too far away from the medic or u lose healing value
[05:01 am]
Oh_Man -- initially I thought it was weird why is he still using the basic pre-EUD medic healing system, but it's actually genius

Ultraviolet -- Vrael
Vrael shouted: I almost had a heart attack just thinking about calculating all the offsets it would take to do that kind of stuff
With the modern EUD editors, I don't think they're calculating nearly as many offsets as you might imagine. Still some fancy ass work that I'm sure took a ton of effort
[12:51 am]
Oh_Man -- definitely EUD
