Use Map Settings - (1) Ice Fortress
To play this map (Use Map Settings), you must download the new (cost free) Starcraft Broodwar from Battle.net. The map runs without any problems in SC-BW 1.23.10.13515. The old version from the 90s does not include the new ramps, and you will quickly encounter an error message stating that no new units can be placed on the map because the unit limit used to be ~1700.
This is a defense map. It is played like a normal Starcraft Melee game, but you play it with 'Use Map Settings'. The fun of the map lies in consistently defending against a superior number of 7 different AI opponents with different attacks (but only coming from the south). Another source of tension is the Hero Attack, when all enemy units on the map attack at the same time. You can play it safe by upgrading only a few units into heroes, or you can upgrade many units and risk a devastating Hero Attack.
All 8 players start with 50 ore, 0 gas, one main building, 4 workers and the same amount of ore/gas in their mineral fields/vespene geyser, like in the melee game. There are no expansion bases, each player must make the best of their starting base. Enemy units are not created using triggers as in similar maps (except when you upgrade a hero), but rather by the Blizzard custom/insane AI as in the standard Melee game.
Your position is perfect for defense and further away from the AI players, giving you a little more time before the trouble starts. You have some additional buildings that 1) show you the area around your base, 2) allow you to upgrade units to hero versions, 3) sell units for half the construction cost, 4) exchange gas for ore 5) convert Overlords into Dark Archons, and 6) repair some of your damaged Protoss units (see image below). Raszagal will appear after 3 minutes and show you the important locations. At the end of the tutorial, you will be asked whether the AI should be allowed to cheat with resources (as designed by Blizzard) or whether the ore supply should be regularly reset to zero via a trigger as soon as all mineral deposits of this player have been exhausted.

Every time you upgrade a unit to a hero, the enemy also gets a hero and/or normal units. If you don't have a risk-free hero upgrade, a die roll is made, with a 1:16 chance of a Hero Attack being launched: After a 4-minute period of peace, all heroes and normal units of all 7 AI players attack at the same time! You can receive risk-free hero upgrades on the market. The higher the cost of the sold unit, the more likely you are to get one.
Enemy heroes appear in the center of the map. A Hero Attack is easier to deal with if you take care of these heroes in good time. Hint: Heros too can be mind controlled!
You win when you defeat all 7 opponents. An opponent is defeated when he lost all of his main buildings (Nexus, Command Centers, Hatcheries, Lairs, Hives). You have won the game fairly if Save&Load is only used to continue the game on another day and not to avert an impending Hero Attack!
The mission briefing at the beginning contains detailed instructions, but with the knowledge above, you can start right away.

Miscellaneous:
-- I haven't had Windows running for years where I could install Battle.net and Starcraft Remastered. I play under Wine, where Starcraft freezes from time to time, not only on this map but also on normal melee maps. Please let me know if the map doesn't run smoothly.
-- The map was created with SCMDraft. Some doodads were placed incorrectly, but this is only noticeable upon closer inspection. If the map is edited with another editor, these doodads could be deleted.
-- I would be very happy if someone could suggest similar maps to me. I've seen a few where enemy units are generated by triggers and come from all sides in huge swarms. I don't like these maps, they're too stressful for me. (I like smashing lots of Zerg/Protoss/Terrans, and I dislike it when they are generated in huge numbers by trigger and come at me from all sides.)
-- If you find a bug, please feel free to post a description of the error in this thread, and I will fix it.
