Compelling stories. Intense multiplayer. Endless replayability. Qualities that made StarCraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II the titans of their day. Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation.

We’re restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done.
Reckon we can look forward to contemporary resolutions?

Dare I say, the string limit will be removed? :D So many possibilities with this announcement. And so many dangers too. I wonder how many maps would be broken by such a radical overhaul of the game.

We don't yet know the scope of this. It could just be keeping the content the same, but updating the engines for new networking, graphics support and Windows 10 compatibility.

Or, it could be an HD textures and models change.

The least likely is that they would actually enhance the game engine, especially as the only point to doing that in SC would be to enable extra custom mapping, but surely they would rather mappers use SC2 (which will have more features than SC mapping ever will).

I was also thinking they may be moving all the classic games over to the new Battlenet. Could be really good for our scene, a massive boost in popularity.

Too many people are hyping about HD remakes but reading the entire should make it obvious that the job opening is mainly meant for someone to fix existing issues

A BW HD-remake was my first thought too, but I somehow doubt it :(

I believe.

It's likely its for patching existing issues but if it was for an HD remake, the most likely thing would be just making a download campaign with fresh maps and Vanilla and BW units.

Hey I'm actually very qualified to do this. Too bad Blizzard is in Irvine and I don't want to move, plus they don't pay very well :massimo:

Looks like they're finally reaching the point where BW doesn't seem like a threat to SC2 sales anymore.
This line "Create conditions for experiences that look as good as they play." might suggest graphical improvements I guess, tbh they could have had a version of Brood War with interface redone for 1024x768 (like diablo2 lod) and re-rendered higher resolution sprites (they have the original 3d assets) as early as 2001, that you'd have to wait this long, if it even happens, is just embarassing. I would have extremely slim hope for sprite re-renders at any rate, since if you up rez them too much you'll need to update the textures as well since they're extremely basic from what you can see in the wallpaper renders and other promo material.

Also be careful what you wish for with the idea of battlenet 2.0 and patches to triggering and data, they way new Blizzard runs custom content creation for sc2 is total shit, with maps and complicated setups being broken by patches like clockwork every 6 months, sometimes with no solutions for the bugs until the next patch or never and no way to play an older version, it's pretty normal to open a large year old project and see an error console with 400 data XML and trigger errors in it and all custom text (unit names, tooltips, trigger messages) erased or actor messages (controlling things like unit attack animations) corrupted or erased.

I just hope they leave the original BW intact so I can still use it if they fuck everything up like I'm suspicious of them doing.

Classic games is seeking a skilled artist to help revitalize StarCraft, Warcraft III, Diablo II, and our catalogue of other classics.

This is an art generalist position requiring hands on direction, management, and engine integration of a wide range of assets including characters, weapons, and environment props.

Quote
Implement approved assets into the game engine, along with making any needed fixes to keep assets consistent and game ready.

Personally create high quality character models, weapons, and environment assets for a variety of different projects and art styles.
Work closely with the art director, art leads, production team, and outsource manager to determine outsourcing needs, pipelines, budgets, and costs for art assets.
High def remake seems very likely based on available information.

Nov 16 2015, 1:39 pm TF- Post #12

Sounds like they want to redo assets completely, that's a lot further than I would have expected them to go.
What they should do is hire someone that actually cares like the WC3 Project Revolution crew, even the main modeller of SC2 admitted that the PR stuff was really good at making 3d models that look just like the original Starcraft sprites.
Doubt it though, most likely you'll get something that looks like this

Well, the most waited for players, is the HD support, for modders/makers - Supporting Extra sizes of maps (512, 768, etc.),
Maximum Possibility of changing everything (including Doodads/Tiles) and some tweaks to triggers (clearing bugs).

For me, is just better to have bigger nicer maps than HD support (I like the game in what it used to be, not in fancy resolution)

That is my opinion. Just because if they would change game to HD one, it could be take much time to make an infinitive Hud with
growing details on characters just for one pixel.

They just need to rebuild the game from the ground up, and make sure whoever's doing the code isn't a fucking moron. SCBW is anything but intuitively designed and it shows in how many hardcoded restrictions are arbitrarily and purposelessly slapped on modders whenever we try to get something done.

If you rebuild the game from the ground up I'm not sure how effective it's going to be at moving people over. You're going to just end up with three games: Brood War Original, Brood War High Def, and Starcraft 2.

If they PATCH Brood War with this new shit, well, that will force everyone to move over.

Bigger map sizes are effing useless with that damned Nooks and Crannies error. That needs to be fixed.

Really, as a mapper the things that excite me the most are things like being able to make custom in-game artwork (that would be sick) and an increased or removed string limit, as well as increased or removed limitations on Locations, Switches, etc. The rest can stay.

That's one of the fun parts about mapping, it's about working around limitations. If you remove all limitations and mapping becomes just coding in C++ then it really loses its appeal to me IMO.

Like, take my RPG. I'm really proud of it when compared to other SC RPGs. But compared to just RPGs in general (Skyrim, Witcher, Diablo etc,) its shit, lol. It's only impressive in the context of the limitations of Brood War.

I don't see why anyone cares about making things that are impressive. Making things that are of quality is what counts. I just want my campaigns to be quality works, and stripping away limitations of the engine certainly eases that burden.

It was not designed with modders in mind. So of course they took the most expedient path, just to get a game that worked out the door.

Well, I agree with Pr0nogo, the game must be made from the scratch but, at least with some imported codes from SC.
We actually want to make a remake, not the original game so codes will be useful for remaking. (if i am not mistaken here)

I didn't say to remove the limitations of sizes on the map, i said just allow to make bigger size of maps than the standard ones.(i don't think if there would be giant map that holds at least 10000 pixels. just at least allow to make maps at least 768 pixels) With more pixels, you can make a bigger RPG map that would be exciting.
But, making more spaces with Triggers, Projectile Limit and maybe ability to giving hero's spells (maybe) would do very good things to entire SC community.

Mmm, for modder, objective is: make the game different. its the only objective that is important to him, not removing everything.

Modder himself cannot change hardcore things, but making some minor changes, is only in his possesion. (except Armaggeddon Onslaught)

The changes in Armageddon Onslaught are pretty much the standard of modern BW modding now. Even though I've been doing nothing but making campaigns, my mods usually have concepts and systems that are equal or greater in complexity than what was present in AO. And mine are comedy projects, I haven't even gotten around to getting significant progress on my serious ones yet.

A modder doesn't just 'make things different'. A modder simply isn't satisfied with what little they can do with just mapping. Custom sounds and graphics require modding. Custom units require modding. Pretty much anything custom (read as: not in the game's original files) requires modding in order to implement. That's just how it is, and that's why people make mods.

Oh bother...

Plan to make BW awesome:
part 1: replace arrays with auto-bounds check, exception-less arrays.
part 2: let resources files be placed in MPQs
part 3: r/w Triggers: (structType) (structIndex) (structFieldIndex) (newValue)
part 4: profit
