ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

The 5% is anecdotal from a guy who runs a large raid, likely rounded up.

At my company, I've had likely 10 Caviar Blues fail on brand new Optiplex 790s, which I'd guess we have 200 of. I doubt I could give you the exact numbers, but I know I've personally had 3 die within their first year (none in the 2nd year), and there are 8 more people who do the same job as me.

This particular review is interesting because the 14% failure rate is derived mostly from the 7200.11 1.5 TB series which has a whopping 25% failure rate (everyone knows this, and it's been mostly fixed in the newer seagate models). The green drives aren't being used properly either, so they get decimated in the raid system backblaze is using.
These drives are also jam packed in poor containers which suffer from vibration issues.

Unfortunately, this review has plagued google so I can't find the other reviews I used to see which did indeed put WD at the top of the RMA list. Everyone's focused intently on the terrible 7200.11 drives (which are godawful) and seem to miss the fact that Backblaze still buys seagate because the price is right. Hitachi drives used to be called "deathstars" back in the day, since their deskstar line typically had high failure rates. I also recall seeing some incredibly poor 1 TB hitachi drives when compared to the spinpoint f3 during its glory days in 2010-2011.

Personally of my drives, I've only had 1 maxtor and 1 WD green fail on me. My 7200.10 is actually still working after 7 years and I have 3 160 GB deathstars in a raid 5. I was kind of sad when my newest drive, barely a year old, got bad sectors on it.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of Westernhagen either, Fanta vier much better! But they didn't drop the lyrics that fit the situation. Farty: Ich bin wieder hier; nobody: in meinem Revier; Me: war nie wirklich weg
