We can't explain the universe, just describe it; and we don't know whether our theories are true, we just know they're not wrong. >Harald Lesch

I'm using Audacity® 1.3.13-beta (Unicode)

I'm having a simple problem. I have an audio track where I want a part of it cut out. Problem is I don't have exact times of the beginning and end of the part I want to cut out so I have to listen in to find the exact borders. However, setting the cursor to listen in clears the previously set selection.
What I want to know is how to do this most efficiently with arbitrary precision.

I have found 2 workarounds:
- Determine and note the exact time or sample of the beginning and the end and then just use the selection textboxes at the bottom of the screen to set your selection to whatever you want. I haven't tested this because this method is too tedious to be practical.
- Also I've already found a fairly smooth workaround: Instead of working with selections cut the track into 3 clips using the split function and delete the middle clip. This is what I'm currently using but I refuse to believe that the selection system is so utterly useless if you're concerned about precision of minute long or longer selections.

Another thing I don't understand is when I modify the selection by using Ctrl + drag mouse it snaps back to what it was before as soon as I start playback (without setting the playback cursor!) Any way around that?

So please SEN, tell me how to use Audacity's selection system efficiently.

Find the first location you want to split at. Instead of fine tuning to the other end of the split, drag-select to select the entire first half of the audio you want to keep. Save Selection As, delete. Now you are left with a file of the first half, the commercial and then the music. Rinse and repeat for either the commercial or the second half of the music. Merge two halves together, fade into each other very slightly if necessary.

Maybe a few seconds work in vegas or audition. I know Audacity has an annoying control scheme though.

Should've said explicitly that I meant splitting. Fixed.

My suggested workaround is to get Sony Acid Pro 7 and then you won't have this problem :P

This is why I use samples, zoom in really far, and mark down the sample number in notepad or something, then reselect stuff just by typing in the starting sample and the length.

Well... Now I really wonder why Audacity became so big. Open source + many features doesn't already make a program good...
The only reason I switched from Goldwave to Audacity was because of the built in mp3 support and unlimited file size which is standard in current programs. So I'll look into an updated Goldwave and if everything else fails I'll try your guys' suggestions.

I usually favor light-weight-ness over features and of course ease of use above all else.
How big is Vegas?
Afaik the Sony audio program line is quite big, right? I can remember like 8 years back using one of their programs that had 700 MB and was bloated as hell. Is this still true?

I just checked the folder for it, the whole thing is 220 MB ^^ The program itself is 7.78 MB.

It comes with a ton of audio samples which are free to use in projects and such, I guess that adds to the size.

Audition 1.5 shouldn't be any bigger than 30-40mb or so. Audition 3 is terrible. Anything newer is probably worse.
