I'm wondering how I can shut down the other computer on my network using shutdown.exe.

Let's say the computer I want to shut down is named Bob and it's IP is 192.168.0.106, how do I get this to work?

I've tried
shutdown \\bob
but it doesn't seem to work, it just displays the help. Any thing I could try?

Read the help. You need to add additional arguments when you run shutdown.exe because it does nothing by itself.

I tried
shutdown -m \\bob -r
and it said that access is denied.

Just a wild guess here : The account you're using needs to have administrator access to that computer for it to work.

Also this command line should work : Shutdown -r -m \\Bob
Just incase the order does matter

only one user can have administrative access or else i dont know cuz im running vista.
i was thinking you would have to give it permision before you even run SHUTDOWN.it works in linux/ubuntu but not XP then?

Bah whats the purpose to turn it off through a network, if you're going to have to physically turn it back on?

Well, if the computer doesn't have a display attached. I have one computer here that doesn't have a display on it. (actually two now, since the display for one doesn't work anymore) I do shut down those from another computer when I want to shut them down. I've never tried doing it that way, though. One computer is my router and I shut it down through its web-based interface. The other computer is one I turn on when I want to access some of the things I have on it; I use that one through remote desktop, so I shut it down through that remote desktop connection as well.

I want to be able to just do it without having to set anything up.

I think this command only works on networks with a server, where your profile is hosted on the server and you can load it on multiple accounts. And the targetted computer will only acknowledge the demand if you have administrator access on it. In other words : If you want to do that at home forget it.

@ cheeseman : There is only 1 "Administrator, but other accounts can be made to have the same access level.

Yeah, you would most likely need some server that the computers get their login account information from. Also, only the pro versions of Windows include support for using those servers (Windows 2000 Pro, XP Pro, and Vista Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate, for example).

Start->Run->Cmd


shutdown -i

You'll get a nice interface.

Yeah, I was already in that, it doesn't do anything.

Remote Desktop Connection would be the best wayt to do it (that's my way!).
You don't even need to be an admin, just press [CTRL]+[ALT]+[DELETE] and click Shutdown...
Done!

Nvm, I found it, how do I set up my other computer to allow remote connection from this one? I am connected directly through a router, both are desktop computers, mine is Windows XP Media Center Edition.

Do this:
1. Open Control Panel click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.
2.Click Internet Information Services, and then click Details.
3.In the Subcomponents of Internet Information Services list, click World Wide Web Service, and then click Details.
4. In the Subcomponents of World Wide Web Service list, select the Remote Desktop Web Connection check box, and then click OK.
5.In the Windows Components Wizard, click Next. Click Finish when the wizard has completed.
6.Click the Start button and click Run. Type Net Stop w3svc, and click OK. This temporarily stops the World Wide Web service to keep your system safe while you update it with security patches.

Then,
Right-click My Computer, and click Properties.
On the Remote tab, click the Allow users to connect remotely to this computer check box.
Click Select Remote Users, and then click Add.
In the Select Users dialog box, type the name of the user and then click OK. Click OK again to return to the System Properties dialog box, and then click OK to close it.

My only problem, is that this is for connecting anywhere, which I don't like to have as an option, is there any way to make it from the other computer on the network only?
