wth is starcraft

Is anyone participating in Script Frenzy? Its a lot of fun...you try to write 100 pages of script over the month of April. I've done it the past few years, but haven't hit 100 yet. Last year I got to 63, so I think I'll win this yea, as long as I come up with a plot. D:

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

I tried last year, and only got to like 40 pages. I'm used to writing shorts, not feature-length scripts. :/

yaaaay but do it this year. :awesome: I think I'm going to make a tv script. I've been making theater scripts because its what I'm familiar with...but I kinda want to do a few episodes instead...

TV is a lot easier. :awesome:

I'll try again this year. I haven't written a script in a while.

I order you to forgive yourself!

Will any of these scripts be made for real?

Also, does anyone have an idea for a [movie / tv show] that could be made completely with no budget? (A bit like SNL digital shorts perhaps?) It could be pretty interesting if well done.
Or even made in 3D / 2D animation.

(Not sure if that made any sense...)

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

Sometimes people get lucky. An entry that was submitted to NaNoWriMo a couple years ago is now a feature film starring Christolph Waltz, Reese Witherspoon, and Robert Pattinson.

And define "no budget" as the SNL Digital Shorts have a huge budget. Most shorts that look like they have no budget actually have a budget (because it costs a lot to rent equipment, pay the crew, and pay talent). Unless you're talking about the shorts you find on YouTube that people make with their digital video cameras.

"No budget" as in "No budget" :D It's possible to make with regular house hold items but the story is made in a way that it doesn't sacrifice quality.

I read on SNL digital short wikipedia page that "The segments were originally recorded with consumer grade digital video cameras and edited on personal computers." In my head, it meant without a big budget (Or no budget at all)...

What would be pretty cool would be a [movie / tv show] made without any budget that still looks professional and that could be even better than some of the [movies / tv shows] that are made with big budgets.

They exist, look for independent films.

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

The Lonely Island (the guys who do the SNL Digital Shorts) used to make low budget shorts with consumer DV cameras (which is why I mentioned the part about YouTube-quality shorts). The article that that part of the Wikipedia page is referencing is talking about their first SNL video, Lazy Sunday. Though that was shot on DV cam and cut on Jorma's computer, it was meant to be another Lonely Island YouTube video rather than an SNL thing. Lorne Michaels decided to air it anyway as a "Digital Short" and everything changed after that. Notice that the following shorts weren't done that way as soon as their popularity finally exploded. I don't think they would have won an Emmy if "Dick in a Box" was the same low-rez DV quality.

It would be awesome if it was possible to do a high quality short with no budget, but that would require a free HD camera rental, free tape stock, a crew working for free, a composer working for free, free permits to film wherever you want, free access to an Avid or FInal Cut Pro station (and an editor doing it for free), free sessions at an audio mixing facility (and a sound editor and sound mixer doing it for free), and free access to a Symphony bay (and an online editor doing color correction for free). Granted some of that can be done for free if you do it yourself, but that only cuts a small amount off.

I guess I'm coming from a different world where I don't see YouTube shorts as being the same as TV of movie shorts. You can make anything for free and post it online, but you can't really take it on the festival track and try to get something more than internet fame out of it. My friend made a short at our office without paying crew fees, location fees, or any permits, and his budget was $2,600 (which went to rental fees, online mixing fees, etc.). Something as simple as his short could have been made on a crappy quality DV camera and posted on YouTube, but he never would have been able to submit it to festivals with any hope of acceptance had he not invested money in it.

Hell yeah they do! I've been a huge fan of theirs for years (prior to them joining SNL, even), and I'm so glad they've gotten all the kudos they deserve. :D

I think Will posted the first video I had seen here, and I lol'd. So they're good in my book.

I order you to forgive yourself!

That short film was pretty good.

I already own an HD camera that has a very good quality (AFAIK) and have most of not all the programs needed to do the editing (Blender sequencer, VLMC...). If the script is made for a house, I guess I wouldn't have to pay for location fees or permits.

The problem I would get would probably be crew quality... And the length of the story. 100 pages seems like a lot longer than a short. (I don't think I would be ready for something that long. On the other side, when you have a good idea, it can be easy to bring it very far.)

I think I am starting to deviate from the thread...

Also: Apos

I guess making a 3D animated movie could solve part of the crew problem (But brings a couple different problems.).

I'm sure its fun to write a movie/any script with the idea of an unlimited budget. I've tried, but I've only written stage-plays and once I tried a made for tv movie script, but that was about seventeen pages long. Actually I should make that again.

It takes a lot more than what I listed, but those were the basic things. I'm not trying to be that guy who crushes dreams, but I work in this business for a living, and unfortunately it takes money (or like-kind donations) to get anything of good quality done. If you want to make a short on your own on your HD camera and cut it together with those programs, that's totally fine and you totally should do it.

I order you to forgive yourself!

I can understand that if you do this for a living, you will have to invest some money into the project (And hopefully get some back :bleh:...) but I guess that if I'm doing a movie based on a script made in 30 days, the tools I already have should be able to do the job.

I wonder if I'm ready to find out how good it can be to work on a project like this. What kind of quality I can get out of it? Will I learn a lesson or two in the process?

I probably won't have enough time this year, but I'm looking forward to do it for next year. (Meanwhile, I can probably start to know the tools better and make a couple experimental tests.)

I think I'm back to the point where I have a hard writing a coherent post...

Screnzy/NaNoWriMo are based less on quality and more on reaching a deadline. :) So don't fret over quality, that's what revision is for.

I'm writing a sit com, so I don't really have to worry about quality anyways! :awesome:

Actually I came up with an awesome plot. About twenty-somethings that still play with toys.
