Some of you (like one or two) may remember something attempted back in the SC1 days, called Super StarCraft Modders Brawl. SSMB was a contest to design an awesome unit using a mod and battle the awesome units of the other participants with it. It didn't work out too well because there weren't that many modders. However. I was doing some data editor work for IskatuMesk in an attempt to re-create Armageddon Onslaught. He's since converted it to a TPS and moving on to UDK, but this did give me the idea to re-create SSMB... So, here goes!

Rules:
-You must design one (1) awesome unit. "Awesome" is defined here as "creative" - just giving yourself 9999 damage and a slightly edited projectile won't be enough at all. Judging will be performed by everyone in the contest - that is, everyone can vote for any unit other than their own.
-Units that are obviously overpowered will be either nerfed or disqualified. If your unit is an otherwise cool one that just happens to have too high stats, then I'll nerf it, but if it's just a Battlecruiser that shoots Yamato Guns instead of its normal attacks (or w/e) then I'll disqualify it.
-You MUST select the base unit you will be using. It can be anything, but not one that's already in use. The reason is that if multiple people have the same unit, it will be harder to remember who had which unit when it comes to judging. (You may also not change your unit's base graphic, unless you want to use a graphic that isn't used by any unit, or a custom graphic.) I myself will use the Science Vessel (and the Terran Beacon - don't ask ;P ).
-Playing as a summoner is fine, but don't use units that other people will likely want for their main units.
-Not a rule per se, but a request: PLEASE don't edit existing entries, but create new ones. When I combine the units into one map, this will make things a lot easier. (If you don't understand why, it has to do with MPQs and XML and I don't feel like explaining it.)
-You must submit a map with your unit in it by November 13th.

You make an awesome unit using the data editor/triggers. What else do you need to know? (If you want I can PM you my design document.)

@above: Yay!

EDIT: Oh, make sure you can fight both land and air units. ;P

You make an awesome unit using the data editor/triggers. What else do you need to know? (If you want I can PM you my design document.)

EDIT: Oh, make sure you can fight both land and air units. ;P
I thought the contest was more based upon the unit itself (how you attached models, tint, etc.) more than weapons/special effects. Am I wrong?

Anything and everything that you make is considered. eg. if you chose the Hydralisk, you could leave the Hydralisk itself completely unmodified (except for statistical buffs, probably) and just make the projectile awesome and win.

Count me in... I'll use the Archon and own all you biznitches.
  • So we create a 'Mod' file?
  • Or just create the unit and import that
  • Can my unit have custom abilities?
  • Is this more about aesthetics or more about mechanics?
  • Is there a limit to the behaviours/weapons my unit may have?
  • without stating the obvious - what do you consider overpowered?

... a bit more clarity would be awesome.

The original SSMB was done with two people: Myself and ForTheSwarm. It started as a contest between the two of us to see who could write better iscript code. ;P However, I've been asked repeatedly to extend the date, so I'll move the deadline back a week.

@above: You create a map. I'll manually import the unit data through copying the XML. Your unit can have custom abilities, of course. I will judge more on the mechanics behind the unit, but seeing as everyone can vote I don't know what it will be overall. Your unit can have as many behaviors and weapons as you need, as long as it doesn't cause lag. And I consider something overpowered if it's way stronger than the other entries... I'll nerf dudes as needed, so don't worry about the balancing. (As long as your unit is creative, I'll add it, though maybe with statistical variations.)
