There's no reason to get a 940 over a 955 and the 940 you selected does not come with a cooler so you'd have to buy one. If you're buying ANY Phenom II, make sure its a C3 stepping.

The PSU is an old outdated platform and there are many better choices for the price. Max wattage isn't everything. Amperage, adherence to up to date specifications, efficiency, these are things that are just as important.
wierd? this one says it comes with heatsink and fan

btw, no idea what c3 stepping means :P

The sword and the faith

The 940 you originally linked to did not which was why I said so.

The stepping is the 'version' of the processor. C3 has an improved memory controller and is much more stable.

so what would the version of the amd 940 black?

is the .3 ghz worth the extra cash to get a 955?

The sword and the faith

The price difference is minimal. I suppose you'd be fine with a 940 if you aren't overclocking but if you aren't overclocking any black edition is a waste.

well i know the 940 can easily OC to 4.0 on stock.
what abouts the 955?

my info comes from a friend who built his own computer, so yeaaa

One of my policies is I don't help people who are listening to anyone else, and I only make exceptions on that for people like rockz. As far as I'm concerned your friend is an idiot until proven otherwise.

Would you probably be as happy with a 940? Sure. Would I buy a 940? Nope. Maximum possible OC comes from higher binned chips.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

These are the only c3 stepping processors newegg has:
945 -this one comes with a $15 newegg gift card, so it's essentially $15 off, but you can't apply it to this purchase. However, you can order something else with free shipping (or wait for your hard drive prices to come down). Ends 6/3.

955

965
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727

You'll notice the "GM" rather than "GI" in the model #.
There's also an $87 x2:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103847

that's actually all the c3 stepping that newegg has.

well, its more like anecdotal evidence that the 940 can be OC'd to 4.0 on stock cooling.
was just wondering what the 955 would OC to

Just so you know, you can use GHz as a comparison when comparing otherwise identical processors. Give a slight advantage to the c3 stepping (it's more energy efficient, stable, etc). The speed difference in 3.0 GHz and 3.2 GHz is minimal. It only gets worse if you overclock both to their maximum. The best way to figure out what to buy is "you get what you pay for", so long as you recognize the better values (like c3 stepping is cheaper than c2 stepping for God knows why).

not sure if i'm readin the spreadsheet right, but on average +1.5 at stock cooling?

None.

Jun 2 2010, 8:46 pm rockz Post #31

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

+1.5? what?

955 is 3.8 GHz without much trouble (19 multiplier). You'll need to bump up the voltage.

Darksnow, don't argue with Ex and don't trust your friend who "built a computer." Ex dedicates his life to this and I guarantee he is five times as good at builds than your friend. He's what is called an expert. Trust him blindly and you'll be happy.

Jun 3 2010, 1:06 am darksnow Post #34

that is pretty much his build except i'm goign to use the 1 TB spinpoint suggested by rock :P

The 1 TB spinpoint is a good choice.

Also I'm curious what makes that adata ram better then this.

maybe
Specifically Designed to compatible with Intel Core i5 and Core i7 for Intel P55 motherboard

ddr3 is almost all the same. (There's a balance in clock speed and cas latency which is found at lower clock speeds for best performance). It's also $15 more.

Finally, you FAIL at picking the right processor. GM, not GI. The one you linked has c2 stepping.

With the C3 you're pretty much set. Enjoy your build.
