:payne:

Imagine if we could successfully create a 'Portal' universe in sc2?
I am proposing to share our efforts to create such a map.

We'd need:
- Coders (devilesk?)
- Level designers (anyone?)
- Aesthetic workers (qPK?)

Who think it'd be a great idea?
If we succeed, for sure people will want to come take a look at our community! :)

Ideas:
Main character: Zealot
Cast the portals as spells. We can of course target the ground with it.
Use different terrain to indicate if you can set a portal or not.
Portal animation might use the photo canon's attack animation.
The Defensive Drone would be used at some points (enemy?).

Problem: Gravity...

How can we do that?

Like the game Portal?
Tell me if I imagined accordingly: you shoot two portals on the ground and if you touch one of them, you are teleported to the other.

Exactly. You use that system to solve puzzles.

I sincerely doubt that you'll be able to implement the portal system as in the original Portal game. =/

If you somehow pull it off, however, make it multi and give everyone weapons. :awesome:

Wouldn't that ruin the puzzle aspect of such a game? I barely can imagine a good puzzle with that system applied to more than one player, really.

Not really. It'd just transform it into an intense, out-think-your-foe-before-he-blasts-you type puzzle. Imagine guys with rocket launchers, handguns, and portal guns warping around trying to shoot each other. Shoot a guy thru a portal. Deflect a rocket through a portal to hit the person who fired it. Drop a portal on the floor and one above your opponent, drop thru it, and all of a sudden he gets randomly melee'd from behind. It'd be awesome.

Sounds epic.
As soon as the Portals basic engine will be ready, we'll actually be able to make both projects! :awesome:

Good luck trying to get SCII's rendering engine to show the other side of a Portal. Remember Portal's trailer, showing the player-character looking at themself through a portal, looking at themself through a portal, looking at themself through a portal...? Any rendering engine not specially made for that is probably gonna infinite recursion itself IN THE FACE.

The game Portal handled this by having only nine recursions. After the ninth, a portion of the frame was simply copied to give the appearance of infinite recursions. It'd be awfully hard to do something like that in SC2, though.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. I doubt SCII's rendering engine has that kind of recursion checking, assuming its rendering engine even can recurse in the particular manner that a portal would require. (That is, can we have a surface display the output of an arbitrary camera? And would that surface be able to recursively display itself at all?)

Not required: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/404612 - just a blurring effect when player comes close to portal

Btw: http://forums.sc2mapster.com/development/project-show-room/1403-reaper-madness-showcase-2-physics/ -- That's pretty dang sexy. O.O .. but may be glitchy / laggy .. hopefully they'll fix up the hardware for this.

:payne:

Details like that can be over-passed, imo.
The main point would simply to get the portals functional. ;o

You can abuse the blink ability to some degree but i don't think this is going to be easy to code at first ;)
Anywho, i think that this should have a mutlplayer mode and single player mode :O
The puzzle stuff is single player and the shooter aspect is the multplayer :) With of course some hidden weapon stashes that require some puzzle stuff but i think the puzzles should be done before multi is intergrated

You take the "Vortex" GFX and use it as necessary. Hell, it seems viable in StarCraft I's engine. :P

Portal only had nine recursions? Orly?

And THAT is why this project MUST allow you to see through Portals.

It's not possible to overlap portals like that in the game.

That screenshot must be from beta testing or photoshopped.

You guys would probably be better off just having one person make this map, with a production thread to collaboratively share knowledge, not workload. Otherwise all that will happen is an idea thread. You don't need to see through the portals. Other than seeing through portals I don't see anything too difficult about making the map.
