Anyone have any ideas for statistics one could advance in an rpg as they level?
The only two I can think of (besides hp) are strength (gives upgrades) and mentality (upgrades mana and spellpower). Anyone got any other practical ideas?
None.
Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Wisdom, Intelligence, and Charisma are the common D&D stats.
Some people take out Charisma, and replace Constitution with Vitality (or something of that sort) and often I've seen Wisdom and Intelligence merged together in some way (like your mentality)
None.
Some more details on your map would help.

Hmm... I was also thinking of dexterity, but I have no idea how I would implement this. What would it do? Grant half-second invulnerability every couple seconds as a kind of "dodge" ability, like what one of the spell in spellsword did?
And, er, more detail on the map? I'm just starting to figure out the details of gameplay. However, it will be an openish rpg, with sort of a quest web instead of questline. That is, you have multiple options in a really complex world, which all go together to form your general path. Most players will start as a "peasant," and work their way into new classes as they play the game, such as Mage, Swordsmen, Technician, and then go into even more subcategories from there, such as Shadow/Light Mage, Druid, Pirate, Soldier, Dictator/King/Noble, etc. None of this is set in stone until I actually make it, of course.
I'd tell you more, but I have to get to my next class. Be back in a few hours

Alright, but charisma is something you gain by doing quests rather than levelling up... chopping skeletons to bits won't make you charismatic to people, helping them directly will

How about leadership? If the character fights alongside other characters, his leadership skills might improve. I don't know how leadership could make the character stronger because it depends on your map.
None.
I guess that'll work. I'm just trying to decide what I need now so I can put it in in the terrain sketch (the players adjust their starting stats at the start). If I come up with more stats later, I may need to edit ideas and make the starting area take more precious physical space that I might not have.
None.
Oh, and THIS might help if you're wondering what my "mentality" stat does:
