Let me show you how to hump without making love.

I am already aware of how to use NewEgg and know the basics of building a PC, but might need some help in this adventure. I have roughly a 1000$ to work with at the moment and will have about 500$ more in a week. I don't plan to get everything NOW, which is what is awesome about building a PC, you can purchase the parts over a time period, so lets say I have about 2000$ total to work with by the end of March.

What would be the most I could get out of this? I know nearly nothing about the performance and compatibility of parts. I am interested in getting a computer that can run the latest games, a large screen since I do work with images, watch movies (bluray) and running many programs at once.

What I am basically looking for: nice video card with a good shader, RAM out the ass, a sound card for movies/music/games, a large flat-screen monitor with good quality, an EXCELLENT cooling system so overheating should never be an issue and the like. Could anyone tell me a good build for a PC?

For most of the parts, I'd say just save the money until you can afford what you are trying to get. However, there are some you could get and use now if you already have a computer to use them with, and that don't really change prices too often, or ones that you wouldn't be able to use until you have the whole computer but don't change often.

First of all, you could just get a monitor now and start using it, along with the keyboard, mouse, and speakers if you are getting new ones. Once you've basically decided on the parts, you could probably also go ahead and order the case and power supply, especially if there is some good deal now that might not be available later (for example, if the case you decide on just happens to have a current free shipping offer).

Let me show you how to hump without making love.

I have a laptop and plan on creating this computer from scratch.

I am pretty much hoping people can suggest what would be the best I could get with the money available, as I know relatively little about part models and the like. I do, however, know where RAM, the motherboard, fan(s), power supplies and the like, all fit into the computer.

Pretty much: Can someone go shopping with me? I'll push the cart. Metaphorically of course.

Build based on 2000$ limit. $1,880.99 after tax and shipping to my location. This may vary due to your zipcode and the fact that NJ in all its infinite idiocy makes me pay taxes on Newegg orders while the states surrounding me would not have to. :(

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119137
CM RC 690. Comes with a good amount of fans stock, and I included some more later in the build to add. Great airflow, roomy, great case to work with.

HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319
WD Caviar Black. 640GB model. They come in everything from 500GB to 1TB, so just switch it out for a different size if you think its too small.

Monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236047
ASUS VW266H. 25.5", and 1920x1200 resolution which is as big as I recommend to anyone. Great monitor, wish I had one.

GFX: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150442
XFX HD 5850. Double lifetime warranty. Excellent card.

Sound: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829271001
You said you wanted some good sound, so I went with one of the best: The HT Omega Striker, will support up to a 7.1 sound system. Audio quality is superb.

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005
Corsair PSUs are world renowned. Extremely reliable and I believe they have a 5 year warranty from the manufac. I doubt you'll use it long enough to see it fail.

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227365
3x2GB OCZ Gold. Same series kit that I have. Excellent memory, I love them.

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128375
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R. High quality mobo for a good price, has lots of features, can crossfire 2 GPUs in the future should you feel the need, but I doubt it.

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202
Core i7 920. The only i7 worth getting on the 1366 socket.

Extra fans: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185006
2x Scythe S-FLEX. Reasonably quiet and move a good amount of air.

CPU Cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233029
You said you wanted good cooling, and in my book stock CPU coolers never cut it. The Xigma is a great cooler and since you probably wont be OCing, and even if you are, it will prove more than adequate even in a hot room.

Optical: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106325
Blu-ray drive. You mentioned Blu-ray and even if you download rather than put disks in to watch, its nice to have the option.

Alright, that's excellent. I can have this PC up and running by the end of the month! That's fucking sweet.

Oh wait... Awww... I was planning on getting the most expensive first, but that doesn't appear to be possible as the Graphics card is currently out-of-stock. Well poo. Right now, I am going to purchase the Monitor, CPU, BluRay drive and Motherboard. Unless of course you suggest I save some money in case the GFX card becomes available and snag it ASAP, if it's a hot item.

No matter though, I really appreciate it Ex. Maybe I can finally start running new games on my PC.

I wont be OCing my whole system, so shouldn't be a problem if that is indeed what you are talking about. I really appreciate the help and so does my wallet, he isn't feeling like Atlas anymore.

EDIT: What kind of software would you recommend? Windows 7ish?

Well, Win 7 x64 is for users who aren't afraid to google, search, and put time into making older programs and games work. Or at least that's been my impression. On a system so powerful, I dislike the idea of crippling it on one of the older or 32bit OSes. So yeah, if you think you're up to some detective work, Win 7 x64.

Already running it and got used to it, so no problem at all.

Appreciate the assistance Ex and I will update the topic if there's ever any problems.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

Brotip:
You're spending $2000. $20 for a storage fee is nothing. All 5850s are created equal. Get the cheapest one that's in stock.

2 4850s in crossfire perform better than one 5850, and cost $100 less, but are more expensive to power.

Better cooling has come out in the 2 years since the dark knight came out. Tuniq tower extreme cools by about 3 more degrees on all levels. It's not bad in any case.

You have 6 GB of RAM. You need 64 bit.

I'll always recommend WDC Black (any of them) but they too are getting old. Intel is king of SSD, if you want that (not really worthwhile) and certain samsung spinpoint f3s are currently the top performing drives. This one has a pretty serious edge on all 7200 drives. The raptors still win on access, though. The only thing that sets the WDC Black drives apart is 2 more years of warranty, and being older, and thus more "reliable", since people have been using them with few failures. However, the relative failure rates are about equal. Don't expect failures, but don't get turned off the company if you do get one. If you get two, by all means (thats one major reason why I don't nvidia, however fermi might change my mind).

Good luck with the purchases, and I hope all your parts work out fine. It's always a crapshoot whether or not everything is going to work, even ex had his share of problems with his new computer. Luckily I've only ever had graphics and a flash drive fail.
