[2014-8-13. : 5:58 pm] Devourer -- english is kept simple though; basic communication is easy to achieve and learn in that language, but english does not really limit you [2014-8-13. : 5:58 pm] NudeRaider -- around here nobody gets confused when you're talking about the first January. We're just used to it. Wouldn't be any different in English. [2014-8-13. : 5:58 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- English is a mess because we take the words, syntax and word structures from loads of different languages. xD [2014-8-13. : 5:57 pm] Devourer -- ok can we please forgot about taht one shout by me? that wasn't good. [2014-8-13. : 5:57 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Except that's more in relation to 6, they're not exactly saying "30 6" [2014-8-13. : 5:57 pm] NudeRaider -- but when we're going into the language sector I need to shut the fuck up. [2014-8-13. : 5:56 pm] Devourer -- I am probably nitpicking there but it probably would drive me mad if people around me would use that order. Like, 6:30 pm you wouldn't say "Oh yeah it is 30 minutes 6 o'clock" or whatever [2014-8-13. : 5:56 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- if you said "First January" people would way more confused. Like the first one in relation to what? [2014-8-13. : 5:55 pm] NudeRaider -- When you're too lazy to press shift then why not decide to not-capitalize it [2014-8-13. : 5:55 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- or two-thousand fourteen, but it's easier to say twenty. [2014-8-13. : 5:54 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- I guess you could skip the 'of' before 2014. like "January first twenty-fourteen" nobody would even notice [2014-8-13. : 5:52 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- if you said "15th january' people would look at you funny, but probably understand. [2014-8-13. : 5:52 pm] Devourer -- though I do not quite understand why not just "first (of) january" [2014-8-13. : 5:51 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- because in speech we say like "January first of twenty-fourteen", so that's how we write it [2014-8-13. : 5:50 pm] NudeRaider -- but yeah you know it's bad when you have to look up your measurement system. [2014-8-13. : 5:50 pm] Devourer -- but time, ok cool, we got days months and years. So we order them from most to least significant, which makes sense. How did you guys come up with "Month-Day-year"? [2014-8-13. : 5:50 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- That's what all of the imperial measurements are. There's even way more like handbreadths, fingers, etc. [2014-8-13. : 5:50 pm] Devourer -- You know, measuring sizes, when invented, it made sense to use like a foot or sth; you wouldn't have an idea of "a metre" [2014-8-13. : 5:49 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Also yards aren't even really used all that much. I think they're used in like sports, but people pretty much stick to inches, feet and miles. [2014-8-13. : 5:49 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- To the point where off the top of my head I couldn't tell you how many feet or yards are in a mile. I have to look it up every time. xD [2014-8-13. : 5:48 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Same with our food labels being required to be in both US and metric [2014-8-13. : 5:48 pm] Devourer -- Do you guys actually ever think about your measure system and then realize how totally random that all is? Like I know you are used to it and you have learned it that way, but still [2014-8-13. : 5:47 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- That's the idea, I'm pretty sure. They tried just switching once I guess and everyone was too steadfast and just refused. Having centimeters on rulers is a remnant of that. [2014-8-13. : 5:46 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- So actually I guess people might understand centimeters, since an inch is about 2.5 centimeters. [2014-8-13. : 5:45 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Here metrics is exclusively for scientific and medical measurements. We do learn it in school, but it's so far out of common usage that if you said something weighed x grams or was y centimeters, people would have to figure out conversions to even begin to understand (such as me, earlier) [2014-8-13. : 5:45 pm] NudeRaider -- come to the light side of the force! You have it in you. I believe in you. [2014-8-13. : 5:44 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- That's what we get for using (a variant of) Britain's measuring system. [2014-8-13. : 5:43 pm] NudeRaider -- but one of the most sinful strawmans is to justify one's action by stating that it could be worse [2014-8-13. : 5:42 pm] NudeRaider -- 2nd step is you acknowledge that only you have to power to change who your are. (Or what measurement you use :P) [2014-8-13. : 5:42 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Britain is all screwed up. We have a system, and we stick to it. We're not so wishy-washy. [2014-8-13. : 5:41 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Like they measure distance in miles, but length in meters. [2014-8-13. : 5:39 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- And in Britain it's absolute hell because half the time they use metrics and the other half they use imperial. Or crazy archaic imperial (why would you measure in stone?!) [2014-8-13. : 5:39 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Also you can't blame us, we took our measuring system from Britain and cut out all the useless ones. |
