ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

you shouldn't use msconfig as a permanent solution to anything. It's only there to temporarily disable startup items.

My experience with system restore is that it's worthless.

defraggler is the defrag program I use, since it works better than the windows defrag program in star/stop/and interface. However the windows defrag is good enough for anyone, and windows automatically defrags when idle.

You can also use bootvis to speed up your boot time.

she/her

Yea, I realize system restore doesn't do that, but I'm of the opinion that my computer is suffering from instability due to reasons unknown at the moment, as opposed to viruses.

Just last night, I think I let my computer overheat (room was closed, no ventilation - yes, that was stupid of me), so everything froze and I decided to turn it off for the night.

This morning while running Heroes of Newerth, it froze again; I'm considering reinstalling HoN, but I doubt that is the actual issue here.

Start up issue seems to have gotten problematic; twice this morning, when I clicked my account icon to log in, after the other icons disappeared, nothing showed up again.

EDIT:

I turned off superfetch because my RAM is 9 GB.

We live in a society.

This handy program, Autoruns, will tell you EVERYTHING that is running at startup. It also lets you enable/disable things, as well as delete things, and you can save and load your configurations for testing purposes. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902

No HKLM:Run Adobe Reader Speed Launcher "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
Yes HKLM:Run DivXUpdate "C:\Program Files (x86)\DivX\DivX Update\DivXUpdate.exe" /CHECKNOW
Yes HKLM:Run QuickTime Task "C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
Yes HKLM:Run SunJavaUpdateSched "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
The Adobe Reader Speed Launcher you should disable unless you open tons of PDFs. (You might also want to just switch to the FoxIt Reader for your PDF needs, it should be less resource intensive.)

You should be able to disable the three updaters safely, just make sure that you update the programs manually. IMO, it isn't worth trading your RAM and loading time for things that get updated so infrequently.

I also recommend going through and tweaking your services according to BlackViper's guide. If you have even more time, go through the full Tweaking Companion for your version of Windows. It's a lot of reading and can take some time, but it's definitely worth it. (plus you learn a lot, too)

Check CPU-Z and GPU-Z during load (e.g. running HoN or sc2) and see how your temps are doing if you're concerned about those.

As for icons disappearing that sounds very aids-y to me. Some shit be broken yo.

Also just the room having no ventilation should not overheat. If my computer can survive 110f summer heat on high load 24/7 using a dual GPU you shouldn't have any problems.

Show them your butt, and when you do, slap it so it creates a sound akin to a chorus of screaming spider monkeys flogging a chime with cacti. Only then can you find your destiny at the tip of the shaft.

On the other hand, someone I know lost 2 laptops to a dusty room in a temperate zone in winter. More than just climate can kill a computer, yo.

Yes, if it's extremely dusty like my room that's where the problems come from.

If that happens to be the case there is no better $20 I have spent than on my can of compressed air.

Icons disappearing is a normal XP problem that microsoft doesn't really know how to fix.

And since microsoft doesn't know how to fix it, it's still in 7...

I get icons disappearing when I devour the GDI object cache. To do this I need around 50+ folders open. It shouldn't be happening on startup with windows 7 unless something else is planting itself in your backside.

Download Avast anti-virus and run a boot-time scan for viruses.

You can download it for free, make sure it's the home-edition otherwise you will get a trial.

Avast is the king of false positives.

Avira is better and has a boot disc, so you don't even have to install it.

Avira
Ccleaner
Defraggler

That's all you 'really' need to keep your computer running properly these days. Maybe a decent non-windows firewall also (not sure if Avira provides). But aside from that, just not being a retard is generally enough to keep your shit locked down and out of trouble.
