ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

I'm surprised it doesn't work on the download version either.

Is there some sort of common hardware configuration between all the PCs that you tested? Maybe there's some weird conflict. It would be nice if you could try reinstalling Windows 7 on another PC, to have a little more data to work with in nailing down the problem.

What were the system specs of the dummy PC?

The first dummy PC was an old computer I had, there's no point telling you the specs on it. The second test I ran was on a Virtual Machine (using VMWare Server (not sure which version exactly)) with Windows 7 32 Bit, 2GB ram, default VMWare devices (not sure which, but running games previously on Windows 7 machines when in VMWare has returned no problems (according to friends who do so at the same time)). I also installed VMWare on a non-Windows 7 machine and tried it, but there was the same problem (created a new machine, installed Windows, installed Starcraft followed by that horrid buzzing).

That's what I've been wondering. I have previously had problems with non-legacy/legacy drivers for video cards on Windows 7. Perhaps I need to test with the Legacy drivers (I use the non-legacy drivers for compatibility reasons). The other thing that might be causing it is that my PC uses .NET v4 (not sure if this is an issue, but it is with some very specific old (<v2) .NET apps).

I'll let you know what happens. :wallbash:

SC came out way before .net was a twinkle in MS's eyes :)

The .NET framework shouldn't be causing any problems, although, if you have MSVC++, or some variation thereof, an un-installation of that could easily be causing major problems, but that would have happened on each machine this does not work on (which wouldn't even matter for the one you reinstalled the OS on).

Where are you installing the game? If it is Program Files, is the installer and/or game being run as administrator? You could try installing somewhere else to see if it helps.

Are you using the same screen with each PC? You said the game crashes after fullscreen starts. Maybe if you switch desktop resolutions? I don't think this should make a difference, but it's worth a try.

My default installation path is C:\Program Files\ (the usual one). The application is being run with full administrative permissions.

Wouldn't using 600x800 in the Compatibility tab fix this (I mean, I tried that one, no effect).

SC is 640x480.

... and I think you can't set that resolution in Windows.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

I can set it all the way down to 320x200. Looks terrible because it's 8 bit though.

The lowest I can set is 800x600 16bit.

Through advanced settings, right?

By the way, that image isn't very big on my 1920x1080 display.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

It's in ATi Tray Tools. I think CCC and NVCP have similar settings. (my 1920x1080 display has it pretty small too. It also fails to truly render properly, I get lines everywhere.)

CCC doesn't list anything lower than 640x480. Looks like the advanced settings in Windows doesn't list anything lower on here either.

so much for legacy support. In any case, CCC managed to get it down to 640x480, which is what windows 95 usually runs at. Should work for backwards compatibility.

This is most bizarre. My two cents is that either a) your copy of Starcraft: Broodwar is goosed. Or it seems to me that its a problem with your screen/resolution/graphics settings...

Starcraft Broodwar runs absolutely fine on my Windows 7 64-bit system. in fact, I prefer playing it to SC:2 :P.

At a long shot, try seeing if Blizzard will let you download Starcraft / Broodwar from online - they usually have no qualms about this if you prove you've got a CD-key.

Other than that, I cannot help you mate!
