TITLE
Battle for Middle-Earth

This map is, more or less a tribute to UED_Admirals War of the Lost Kingdoms (WotLK) map that I really enjoyed and still enjoy playing. It's based on the same principle as WotLK in that after every 2:30 Minutes each player is awarded money based upon the amount of kills they have as well as units at their base(s).

INTRODUCTION
You are a lord in J.R.R. Tolkien's vast and wondrous land of Middle-Earth. Take command of some of the locations mentioned in his books such as Isengard, Moria, Edoras, Minas Tirith, and more! Raise an army of epic proportions and conquer all who stand in your way. Will you be the one to rule Middle-Earth?


FEATURES
  • Kill-based Income
  • A "Nature" Force that spawns Goblins from Caves in order to ensure people can get kills
  • 7 Different Spell choices available to help give players an edge.
    - "Heal"; Cost: 25; Description: Fully restores your lords health.
    - "15sec Invincibility"; Cost: 50; Description: Makes your Lord invincible for a short amount of time.
    - "Duplicate"; Cost: 75; Description: Creates a clone of your Lord. Might want to avoid using spells such as "Heal", "15sec Invincibility" and "Teleport to OBS".
    - "Teleport to OBS"; Cost: 100; Description: Teleports your Lord to the Observer.
    - "Bombardment"; Cost: 125; Description; Bombards the target area (use the OBS to select area) with rocks launched from your catapults.
    - "Summon Three Nazgul"; Cost: 150; Description: Summon three mighty Nazgul to help defend your Lord.
    - "Summon Balrog"; Cost: 200; Description: Summon the almighty Balrog to wreck havoc and destruction upon your foes.
  • Gas representing the amount "Magic" a each player has.
    - "Magic" is slowly allocated to each player every 15 seconds. (Might Change)
  • Max of: 5 Weapon Ups, 10 Armour Ups, and 7 Shield Ups
  • Tribute System that allows allies to help each other out
  • "Vision of the Palantír (i.e. Comsat Station) in order for players to quickly scan areas.
  • "Weapons Cache" (i.e. Supply Depot) to increase base spawn (2 Max)
  • (Possibility) The "One Ring" is wondering around, players that acquire it are awarded money or something else.


Player interface (How will the Players play the game?)
Like WotLK, the main objective of this map is to kill of your enemies civilians which specifically represent each player. To achieve this players will use the units that spawn from their base(s) to form an army to find, trap, and kill their enemies civilian.


What's new in your map that others have not done before?
Although my map is based of UED_Admirals WotLK, I'm trying to make it as unique as possible. Some ways which I've managed to make this map different than WotLK is it's LoTR themed, and the map actually looks like Middle-Earth (To be more accurate the part in which most of the events take place :P.) I've also added a force named "Nature" to help the playeres get kills, as well as a variety of Spells that can be used with "Magic".

    - Renamed the base Arvernien to Lond Daer.
    - Renamed the unit "Elven Sailor" to "Númenórean Shipwright".
    - Renamed the unit "Elven Archer" to "Enedwaith Forestor".
    - Modified the Dol Amroth Spawn Cost.
    - Renamed Aldaris to "Bëorian Lord".
    - Moved Moria a little bit down.
    - Renamed the Edoras triggers to Helms Deep.
    - Fixed the Dol Amroth Spawns.
    - Added the Lond Daer Spawns.
    - Added "Deserted Gold Mines" around the map that can earn players extra $$.
    - Added Locations for the "Deserted Gold Mines".

    - Fixed the Archer to Catapult Trigger. (Still needs to be fixed some)
    - Got rid of the invisible trigger because the civilian caused the game to crash.
    - Fixed the "Teleport to OBS" trigger.

    - Back after a long month break!
    - Adjusted starting timer--set it to 5 minutes.
    - Adjusted spawn timer. Instead of spawning at 00:00 it will spawn at 02:00.
    - Fixed "The Shire" Spawn.
    - Fixed "Entenmoor" Spawn.
    - Fixed "Mount Gundabad" Spawn.
    - Fixed "The Iron Hills" Spawn.
    - Fixed "Mountains of Mirkwood" Spawn.
    - Fixed "Rivendell" Spawn.

Wow. This looks amazing from the screenshots. This blows the one Helm's deep map i've played out of the water where it was just some cliffs, and dirt.

Try not to make this too similar to the LOTR diplo map that already exists ("Lord of Middle Earth" is what it's called, I think).

Other than that concern, it sounds good :).

Yeah you're right (It is called Lord of Middle Earth). Don't worry though, it shouldn't be anything like it (I hope). I'm trying to make it pretty unique. I'm not sure if you've ever played War of the Lost Kingdoms but I'd have to say it's more similar to that (as in the gameplay) than the Lotr Diplo (which is a very nice game).

Anyways I'll keep posting updates about any changes I make etc.
Also, does anyone know why my screen shots turn out bad? They always appear very very dark so it makes it nearly impossible to make out anything.
EDIT: Also does anyone know if too many doodad sprites can make the game crash? Every so often when I decide to test it out it just randomly crashes on me. :(

I've found that, very often, there are ways to improve upon a gameplay style. For example, in my takeoff of UED_Admiral's WotLK, I added gold mines (geysers) scattered around that grant players up to 100 minerals per 30sec (don't comment, please - still in testing), because I felt that games based on kills favored certain players and/or bases over others.

Adding in dynamics like your goblins spawning from caves gives games additional dimensions and, imo, improves gameplay. Keep that in mind as you keep going on your project. And even though you're basing this off of someone else's idea, remember that you can always make it unique.

nice map i hope the gameplay is nice ive played lots of LOTR maps i think the strategy games i found the best. like LOTR SD SE. anyways good luck on your map.

Update:
  • 4/17/2010
    - Modified the "Isengard" Spawn Trigger
    - Named the Protoss Archon at the Gray Havens to "Lindon Shipwright"
    - Added a "Target Player's Lord" Trigger for all players
    - Modified the "Magic" Trigger
    - Changed the civialians name from "You" to "Lord"
    - Added triggers for each magic spell for player one
    - "Summon Three Nazgul" now lasts for 45 seconds.
    - "Summon Balrog" now lasts for 60 seconds.

Expect more to come! :D
