Anyone who has played this game knows that you (the overlord) control 4 different types of minions, and you can steer them in any direction.
The brown minions are your standard fighters and also the strongest of the minion horde.
The red minions are resistant to fire and can hurl fireballs at the enemies.
The green minions are weaker than the brown minions when it comes to fighting, but they can conceal themselves and ambush enemies. They are also resistant to poison.
The blue minions are the weakest, but possess the ability to revive other fallen minions. They are also the only minions capable of passing trough water without drowning.

Triggers for brown minions would be easy. I'd just use a bunch of zerglings and guide them with an observer through small passages that only lings and ghosts can get through.
Red minions could be ghosts for that matter.
The other 2 types of minions leave me a bit puzzled though.

How would anyone else here go about creating them in sc?
And while I'm at it, does anyone have a decent collection of small ramps/bridges/passages that only lings and ghosts can use?

You should make them all lings.

Have it be you as the player. Brown minions can be lings owned by a computer that is brown. REd minions can be lings owned by a computer that is red. etc.

From there, you can apply the special properties to them. For example.

Computers not red minion brings unit to lava area = death.
Computer red minions brings unit to lava area = not death.

See? It'd be a lot easier this way.

Detect when a red ling burrows and fire a missile made out of dying Dark Archons.

Just here for the pie

Alternatively you can have the minions as players. Of course, the flaw with this is that when someone leaves it screws the entire map up.

This is nigh impossible to do for multiple units, especially for Zerglings which would outrun pixel locations (I think) and pass them on to other Zerglings.

Well, if they are controlled by moving obs around like was mentioned in the first post, you can just have a unit follow the obs and every few seconds center a location on each of the following units, move a bunch of DTs to the location, cycle a location through the DTs, and if there's a DT with a ling under it, do the fireball.

According to the wiki, zerglings without a speed upgrade move 5.57 pixels a frame, or 11.14 pixels a trigger loop. You would round up, to 12, to be safe. They are 16x16 pixels large. Therefore you could just place a location two pixels large and they couldn't outrun it.

Holy shit. It's hardcore Pikmin.

I've seen a (lame/bad) map that had the players each play as the "underlings/pikmin". IT seems like the best way to do it IMO.

But how pikmin (must've) seen this game and copied the general idea but sugar coated it to appeal to other players, you shouldn't port Overlord EXACTLY to sc. Instead copy the idea of having underlings while having a main commander with different types of underlings that have their own special abilities. Make it easier on yourself.

I echo Zombie's statement. Why copy something exactly when you can make your own twist on it? Even with the suggested systems, you'd be naturally limited to a certain number of minions simply because you can't have more than 255 locations. Instead of 'Overlord', call it something like 'Commander'. Give yourself room to maneuver here.

because, if I copy it I wouldn't have to make up a story because everything is already supplied.
It was a bad idea though, so I'll just drop it
