Anyway I'll give you the low-down on the map I've been working on the past couple of weeks.

NAME: Still looking for one. Suggestions are welcome (please dont say Assassin's Creed)
TYPE: RPG (competitive rpg or regular rpg deciding which I want to do. It has an open-rpg aspect to some extent.)
PLAYERS: Up to 4.

IDEAS: 80% (Going to release a short intro map to setup the storyline once the terrain is finished)
TERRAIN: ~20% (Should go fast once I figure out building placement since most of the RPG is a city)
TRIGGERS: 0%

Plot (going line by line so it is easier for you guys to pick apart anything dull or any ideas you might have for me):
1. You are a part of an ancient order of assassins.
2. Throughout history your order has sworn to uphold peace in your nation.
3. Not wanting to jeopardize the order, the assassins withdrew when the newly crowned king annexed the nation to a neighboring empire.
4. This newly crowned king sentenced the council of nobles to death (some of which were members of the order) and invited the neighboring empires army into the capitol city.
5. Now under heavy guard and a curfew in place, the order has regrouped outside the city walls in hopes to overthrow the king and bring an end to these troubling times.

Key Features
1. Quests are given out by the order's elder. (Two options tell me which you like best)
Option A - The same quest is given out to all assassins (players). Players work together to complete the quest and all players benefit from completing the quest.
Option B - The same quest is given out to all assassins (players). Players must race against each other to complete the quest first (successfully might I add.) and only the person who completes the quest gets the reward.
Note: quests are a good source of progressing your character in the game but isn't the only way. quests do however progress the storyline.

2. Town - the town consists of a central marketplace surrounded by houses and the castle to the north west. The marketplace is where a lot of social events take place such as upgrading your assassin with stronger weapons or armor and buying various things (covered later). Walking around are many civilians. Most dont have names but there are also guards wandering around as well. Occassionally you will see a unit walking around that has a name. These are target citizens and usually will trigger a quest by interacting with it (killing it, talking to it, etc.) or trigger various events. When you are sent on an assassination quest your assassination target will appear somewhere in town.

Another unique aspect about town is that you only have a certain number of minutes that you can spend in town before the guards start to notice you and your suspicious ways. In the beginning of the game you will have a lot of time to spend in town but as you progress it will take less and less time for the guards to take notice of you. This makes upgrading and buying items or scouting out targets a bit harder and more skill is involved.

3. Castle - The castle is off limits 24/7..for those who don't know how to get in :) obviously the final bout in the rpg will deal with you getting into the castle and a confrontation with the king himself.

4. Sneakyness - ever played any of the newer legend of zelda games? if you have im sure you've come across parts where you have to sneek around patroling guards. Well at night (yeah there is a night/day aspect to the game...remember I said curfew? :D ) only certain civilians roam around the street at night (those with special permission) as well as guards. If you can figure out a way to sneak into town at night you just may be able to pick off a few guards for some cash or hit that target that you can never seem to find (hint!). There will also be a part in the game (not saying when) that is reminiscent of bound ums's :) Oh, did I mention for a price you can even spend the night in the inn in town (*cough* useful)

5. Weapons - When your weapon is sheathed you are a dt. Like assassin's creed you have a hidden blade and can attack click targets to get close and assassinate them (of course doing so means you are close to them and that may not always be to your advantage). After you have used your hidden blade or if you choose to take out your weapon you turn into another unit (depending on the weapon).
When you start the game you can choose which weapon you want (some specialty weapons may not be avaliable) and if you want to buy different weapons to use you must do so at the blacksmith in town.
Weapons will include (possibly): Long sword, daggers, short bow, long bow, axe, short sword, poison dagger

6. Armor - Upgrading armor is much easier. Just head into town into the blacksmith to upgrade armor.

7. Vitality - Not sure If I want to implement this due to how much triggering is involved..but meh - Staying well fed is key in the game. If your stamina gets too low you can feint. You can replenish stamina by visiting the tavern or by buying food at the market or by returning back to your camp.

8. Wilderness - Like every other secret society your order has a secret entrance to their camp that only you can find! (guards are too dumb!) There is lots to do out in the wilderness like hunt game (for food and to sell fur in the market), chop down lumber (to sell in the market), as well as ambush unsuspecting travelers traveling along the old forest road.

9. Assassinations - When you assassinate a target in town guards will immediately be notified and will converge upon you (or if it I decide it to be cooperative you and your fellow players). You need to make it out of town alive (guards will stop chasing you after you reach the city limits and enter the woods. Note that you have a certain amount of time to escape the city (before the guards at the gate are alerted and close the gate) in which case if you don't escape you will be put in jail.

10. Jail - If you somehow fail in any way you will be put in jail. Once you are in jail you are stuck there for the rest of the game unless another player bails you out with cash or breaks you out. Of course..there are always other ways to get out...but those are hard and you might die if you get caught :) ...
---------------------------------
Anyway, I need help with a few things:

1. I suck at terrain. I cant explain how bad I am. (see pictures at bottom of post). If someone would be nice enough to help touch up my terrain (make it look less blocky) please feel free to download the map and help me.
2. If you have anything that you want to submit to see if I want to add it to the map feel free (terrain especially).
3. If you have comments on the above written plot and features please state your mind
4. If you have ideas for the map I'd love to hear them.
5. If you have a name for the map, town, npc names (the king, assassination targets, people, etc.), a name for the order, w/e please share :)

NAMES (These are the list of units I need names for):
Old King (wise ruler. got overthrown by current king)
Current King
Leader of secret order
Assassin 1 (your best friend and rival assassin)
Assassination targets (need a bunch of medieval sounding names)
Officer/Guards (need a few)
Military Leader
Ambassador of neighboring empire
King's attendant
Inn Keeper
Bartender
Blacksmith
(basically if you have a name you wanna submit just do it)

^picture of what it currently looks like. dont zoom in it looks less cool :( (kidding of course. not about the less cool part however.)

Thanks for your time guys. -Rain

>be faceless void >mfw I have no face

I like option b for the quests, a competitive game is always fun.

Red classic.

You have pretty epic ideas that I like a lot for an RPG. Unfortunately, your terrain looks like it needs a little more paper and pencil planning for the layout before you actually jump into the map file. When you set up the city, make sure it's congested with a lot of stuff going on. This will add to the fun of going through the crowd. Also, like Zany said it would be more epic to have all the players compete to do the goal first. Find the assassination target in the whole city and whoever can follow the clues the best to find him definitely gets an added bonus, but they each would get a small bonus for completion of the quest which would make teamwork also a good thing to utilize.

In all honesty, it seems that you are moving with the thread very prematurely, but that isn't always a bad thing. If you are seriously dedicated to this map, your ideas have a LOT of potential and I got very interested reading through some of them. The only thing is that your current terrain sample WILL NOT work.

Well triggering and debugging are usually not the problem. I also have written out a more detailed account of the plot for the rpg so that's pretty much done. obviously terrain is my biggest problem I cant quite figure out what to start on first when it comes to the layout of my map. I guess it would be a good thing to sit down and draw things out first. maybe look at a few more tutorials.

--edit--
I'll also make it a bigger map i guess. not like i have to use the whole thing if i dont want to i guess.

This is a really good idea. Too good though. People like you who can come of with ideas this good usually never finish them because they are always find ways to redo it and make it better. Then we have people like Urahara who can't come up with any good ideas, but have the focus to actually do the work on said bad idea. Take this as a compliment?

Anyways on the off chance you can have good ideas AND finish things, I'd a mixture of options A and B. I don't see why you couldn't do both.

This is sort of what I was going to say...But don't give up on this idea it sounds bomb. Can't wait to see some progress.

I suggest messing around with terrain ideas on a separate map file until you're happy with something before placing it on your main file.
