Isometrical terrain is the basis of most maps. While some maps use a lot of rectangular terrain, it quite simply doesn't look good.
But what is Isometrical terrain? It's a long word for something easy to use. Basically, the terrain Blizzard uses in their maps is isometrical. It is a 'puzzle' of 2 dimensional pictures, or 'puzzle pieces', that looks 3 dimensional when the puzzle is put together.
The easiest way to see what the puzzle looks like is to open your map editor, and go to the terrain. Click the type you want, and paint it onto the map. It's that simple!

How it works: Starcraft has a bunch of image files known as tiles. These are the 'puzzle pieces'. Starcraft puts these pieces together to make a 3D-looking image using a preset system.

What makes Starcraft terrain look so good, and not just a repetitive bland terrain, is because most tiles have several pairs, which look almost the same. However, although they are different, they can both go into the same place without looking out of place. So Starcraft randomly chooses one of the pairs each time there is a slot that it wants a piece for. You can see all the possible pairs for a particular tile by going on terrain, and changing the dropdown box on the right to Subtile, and Ctrl-click a tile(i think, someone check this, no scmdraft on this comp). We'll have more about the Subtile tool later.

Another thing about Isometrical terrain is that it doesn't let you do everything. For example, you can't put cliff terrain on top of more cliffs and stack it. Instead, it will just replace it with more cliff. Try it and see for yourself! To get around that, you can use extended terrain.

After, put the bit about extended and the tileset index.

It needs screenies and maybe links, but someone else can do that.

Ok, seeing your sample now gives me a little idea of how to approach this:
  1. Skip the introduction to isometric terrain. Everyone knows what it is. At best, just mention the term 'isometric' as referring to the diamond-shaped stuff people already know how to work with.
  2. I would use the term 'pairs' instead of 'twins', only because twins loosely implies two identical tiles together. 'Horizontal tile pairs', more specifically. Or maybe subtiles? I'm not sure, but I think subtiles is the 'correct' term for that. But I think subtiles could also be the term for tiny pieces that comprise each whole terrain tile in Starcraft's terrain data, which is irrelevant to what we're doing. Someone bring SI in here or get back to me on that?
  3. About SCMdraft's subtile mode: Work it in as an the example of how pairs work. This would kill two birds with one stone, and would be the most clear way to get the point across.
  4. Describe the pair layout of isometric structures between adjacent terrain types a bit. For instance, for a badlands Structure wall coming out of Asphalt, you have 1 pair on the bottom that connects with the Asphalt, 1 pair in the middle that makes the wall's 'body' and begins connecting to the Structure, and 1 more pair that actually finishes blending the wall into the Structure tiles itself.

Maybe offer brief example for non-wall/cliff blends, wall/cliff-top blends (like the above example, but for walls facing the other direction away from the 'viewer'), and wall/cliff corners joints. Point is to get the general idea into the reader's mind that isometric blends are not mysterious heaps of assorted tiles, but rather patterns made of tile pairs that follow consistent and predictable rules for meshing together.
  5. Mention briefly the difference between 'natural' and 'man-made' terrain patterns. 'Natural' terrain types can often be fudged around with more than 'man-made' types, which is why, for instance, the Jungle tileset allows for a lot of cunning natural blends. Man-made types are more constrained on account of their concrete-ness, which generally narrow their fudging options a bit (and punish more for blend errors). <- Save this for a blending tutorial, actually.
  6. Maybe even a special mention about tiles for bridges or ramps, since they're prominently used for a lot of blending, even if they're not an option in the standard isometric terrain set themselves. <- This too.
  7. Touch on the beginnings of blending as (mainly) the act of remixing pairs of different terrain types together manually to appear to break the rules of normal isometric terrain.

OK, so keep my intro? Or cut it down more? I thought it was good for bringing over the idea of puzzles. Feel free to copy paste and edit it.

Naw don't worry. I'll just write it up myself I guess.

This'll be my last tutorial, though. I'll leave all the specific tricks and the other fun stuff up to you guys.
