Hi SEN,

I'm currently using my father's internet by connecting to his AVM Router with a TL-WN321G USB stick on Windows XP.
The first 2 weeks everything went fine, but now my connection is always breaking down after a few minutes.
Most of the time I can restore it by repairing the connection, but it's still only stable for a couple of minutes.
Sometimes I even have to restart my computer or reinstall the driver to get it back to work.

From what I can tell by watching the various status windows I suspect either the stick can't find the WLAN network or the router is refusing my connection request. But there's no obvious reason for that. The signal strength is excellent most of the time, but sometimes goes down to medium for a couple of seconds.

We bought the stick only 3 weeks ago, so hardware failure is unlikely.
I also checked the Router. The DSL/Online and WLAN LEDs are constantly lit, so I don't think the problem is there.
The only "unusual" behavior on my part is that I kept it running almost 24/7 for 2 weeks.

Any ideas appreciated.
P.S. I know my way around computers, so you can keep descriptions short. ;)

That's your problem. I bought a brand new wireless usb device about 6 months ago. Worked great for the first 2 weeks, then started crapping out every 10 minutes. I never pulled it out, and out of curiosity I grabbed while it was in for a few hours and it almost burned off a layer of skin.

The best solution I could come up with was to use a long usb connector wire instead of just plugging it directly in, and keeping it near/on a cold metal pole. Still, it will crap out after a 4+ hours a of use, so it has to take breaks.

Although my stick doesn't get hot. From touching it I'd estimate 40°C (=104°F).
But thx, I will try it out.

That's not it. :(

I switched off my computer and pulled out the WLAN stick over night, but the same problems remained in the morning.

Here's some info, if someone cares:
Link Quality: 90-97%
Signal Strength: ~70%
Noise Strength: 3%
Channel: 6
Firmware: v1.8

I noticed something odd while trying to connect:
At first it shows the router's name (=SSID)


and after a few seconds the name disappears


until after a couple of more seconds the name reappears and the cycle repeats. During that cycle I send 5 frames and receive only 3-4 frames.
Looks to me as if the connection is breaking down altogether or the router refuses to connect for whatever strange reasons...

EDIT:
Alright, I was able to solve the problem.
It seemed to be a problem with the Windows / TCP/IP driver. I downloaded the newest version for my rt73 chip set and it worked. Now I have to deal with another extra icon in my tray and some elaborate non-Windows UI with controls I will never ever need to touch, but w/e as long as it works.


One question remains, why the standard driver on the shipped CD worked for only 2 weeks (no significant system changes), but still, this topic can be locked now.
